Good stay, comfy beds, nice decor, good location
On check in we were given room on 3rd floor, it was meant to be a privilege room (which I paid for), on entry to room it was small, freezing and had 2 temporary oil heaters plugged in. I complained and was told first of all that the hearers should suffice so wait 10 mins. I refused as I paid for a room with heating after all. At my firm request we got moved to a much nicer, bigger, privilege room that matched the description on booking it and had modern air con so was wonderfully warm. The issue was dealt with promptly and with humour and kindness. it's just a shame that having known about it the room is still let out, it shouldn't be until the issue is fixed. The hotel decor is lovely, modern and clean, bathrooms are nice, beds are very comfy. All staff were attentive, chirpy, worked hard and represent the hotel well. The breakfast I paid for was standard hotel buffet but restaurant is lovely setting. I was a bit saddened that on 2 occasions I had had correspondence with the hotel and expressed that it was a very special occasion, partners 40th and our 15 year anniversary so any little touches they could make to help surprise him would be fab. Nothing was done to help me celebrate this and the requests ignored both times. If I were to return, which I would as it is in a superb location, I wouldn't bother with privilege as you get 2 small glass bottles of soft drink and 2 bottles of mineral water as your privilege! Really not worth the additional money.

pokey rooms and bad reception
On arrival there was no concierge and no help was available for our bags (2 pensioners). We asked for a trolley but 'it' was being used for something else and we would have to wait for 15 minutes. It wouldn't have been much use, anyway, as there were two sets of steps to get from the lift to the room on the 2nd floor. We had two rooms booked, one for single occupation and we were told by the receptionist that the larger of the two rooms was on the first floor - that was incorrect and, from the plan behind the door, that was plainly the smallest room on the 1st floor. So we had to move all our luggage (remember, no assistance provided and steps to negotiate to get from the lift). The room on the 2nd floor was only marginally larger but there was, at least, somewhere to put our suitcases in the window bay without tripping over them. Also, on arrival, the corridors to the rooms were littered with rubbish, dropped by the chambermaids but not cleared up. On departure, we were overcharged £2 for the carpark and not provided with a VAT receipt but, by then, I had lost the will to live. Clearly, this hotel regards Expedia customers with disdain if it routinely allocates them to the smallest rooms. To describe on its website '182 spacious and beautifully appointed rooms' is very far from the truth.

Seen better days
I’ve stayed here a couple of times in the past four weeks and on both occasions it hasn’t been good. The exterior of the building is lovely, but the rooms are pretty tired. First time round we had extremely noisy neighbours, whilst second time round it was a mixture of noise and less than clean rooms. The former is a result of rooms with poor sound insulation, so you can even hear neighbours talking. The latter, well we found a pair of someone’s socks in the room, hairs on the kettle, a dirty towel and hair in the bed. The hallway had lots of glasses, bottles, dishes etc that were there all day. It seemed that very little cleaning was going on, so I’m assuming understaffing. The only good point is that a member of the front of house team was really polite and helpful (as opposed to the perfunctory and downright miserable guy who checked me). So, more than just disappointing.

Not what we were expecting from a grand hotel.
On arrival we discovered there are building works which was not advertised at the time of booking. However this was not really a problem juring are stay. They're is a lack of staff preasence generally within the hotel. On arrival we found that our room was in excellent condition clean and tidy etc with tea and coffee as you would expect. We received a good welcome when we visited the spa area which is in an adjacent building, however we found the pool and changing room facilities to be dirty. The floor mainly. The basement bar and restaurant is a nice place to relax with good food and service. There was a charity event held on the saturday evening which was very noisy and disruptive we were unable to eat at the hotel on this evening so opted to visit it a local restaurant and local bars. We were woken at 230AM by guests having very noisy SEX in the room next to ours which included the headboard banging against the wall to such an extent that our bed was moving as well to which we banged on the wall and moved our bed away. Following this we could hear a lot of swearing and doors being slammed until 320AM when i then disided to call the front desk for assistance only to find that our phone was not operational. We disided to try and get back to sleep and a went to the front desk at 7am to complain and found staff to be largely un helpful and basically stated that we should have informed them at the time. Re received no discount to our booking fee as we had paid in advance

My bed room was depressing, the ambient lighting was poorly designed and the colour scheme drab. There was a huge stain on the carpet, it looked like a patch of oil. I was given a room with a bathroom adapted for people with disabilitites, as a result the bathroom, a wetroom - large and cold. It would have been great for a wheelchair user but uncomfortable for me. A heated towel rail would have helped to make me feel more comfortable and perhaps warm up the tiled wetroom as would bathrobes. I did feel like a patient in hospital not a guest in a mid range hotel. Why provide shower gel and shampoo but no body lotion? That should be standard in any 4* hotel. On the plus side - the staff were very helpful.
