Exploring Toronto

Canada’s largest and most populous city, and the provincial capital of Ontario, is also its most exciting. Sat on the shores of Lake Ontario, the city is huge, stretching for over 30kms along the lakeshore. The city of millions is home to an array of ethnic enclaves and some impressive suburbs, and though huge the downtown area is relatively compact and easy to explore for the average tourist. It also has many large parks and a set of near-shore islands that come with tourist goodies. Old Toronto is where it’s at: the Downtown, Midtown, West and East ends and the islands. Downtown includes all the happening streets, including Yonge Street, the world’s longest, and a slew of shopping and eating streets like Chinatown and Little Italy. The waters of Lake Ontario lap against the city and Harbourfront—another buzzing area—while country capital Ottawa and the famous Niagara Falls are just a few hours’ drive away.

Sights nearby

Toronto boasts many outstanding landmarks, not least of which is the iconic CN Tower, one of the world’s tallest structures. There are also waterfront areas, islands and older buildings to check out, all close to hotels and facilities. CN Tower
The Americas’ highest free-standing structure—now overtaken by the Burj Dubai—affords the best views over the city. Situated right near downtown area the waterfront, the CN Tower soars to over 550m and is a must for any visitor. The multi-level observation platform has fine views over town and out onto Lake Ontario, with one of the levels featuring a see-through floor. A pricey revolving restaurant is also incorporated. The four-star Fairmont Royal York is well placed for exploring the tower. Toronto Islands
Just beyond the harbour and downtown area is this enticing set of islands, an easy ferry ride from Queens Quay West. It is here where you get the best views of the city skyline, while the islands are excellent for walking and cycling and for family picnics. An amusement park for children is also located here and you can even swim in the winter or go nude at Hanlan's Point. Ferries serve three different points in the chain. Toronto City Hall
The modernist City Hall is another of Toronto’s intriguing landmark buildings, situated as it is in a semi-circular array near Nathan Phillips square in downtown. It was designed in the 1960s by Viljo Revell, a prominent Finnish architect, and comes with a winter skating rink for the public. Also nearby is the Old City Hall, which hails from the late 1800s. The best way to get there is to take the subway to Queen Station, or stay at the four-star Cambridge Suites Hotel – Toronto.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Toronto is excellent in the eating and shopping stakes. There are many ‘eat streets’ and vast shopping malls to whet appetites, along with well priced, higher-end eating in suave downtown and hotel restaurants. Toronto has a Chinatown—along with significant Korean, Italian and Greek enclaves—and an abundance of steakhouses. Head for Yonge Street, which also has good shopping and is the world’s longest city street, or to Cabbagetown and Adelaide Street for nightlife.

Public transport

Getting around Toronto is not difficult. It is very big, although the touristy parts are quite close-knit and the efficient public transport network covers the town well. You can even get around inner downtown and the Harbourfront on foot and the various methods of transport are integrated. They include a subway with a couple of useful lines, an interconnecting light rail service, and trams (streetcars), buses and taxis.
