2/10 Poor

Mercure appears beautiful from the outside. Foyer & reception are very nice-but from there everything went downhill. Room was dark only one air conditioner worked. No room telephone although room service was offered, no menu provided, very small bathroom, 3 hangers!!for many wardrobes, no dress mirror, coffee machine leaked every time it was used. Mini bar should not have been there it only provided overpriced beer, water, wine & chocolate. Shocking. Buffet breakfast was $32 - very basic ordinary selection but it was fresh. Reception staff seemed unfamiliar with the local area. Several instructions received from them to find various shops & businesses were completely off the mark. Thank god I had the sense to then google things for myself. An unexpected plumbing problem occurred which cut water off completely from the whole property from about 6:30am to 3;00pm on day two of our stay - very inconvenient - we were offered a refund if we could relocate - that was impossible considering the short notice & high season demand in Cairns in August. When we checked out we were NOT offered any compensation/reduction in the cost of our accommodation for our DAY 2 NO WATER EXPERIENCE ie no use of shower, taps for hand washing & refilling water for coffee machine & forget about having to use a toilet!!! Noise level in corridors was unacceptable at times with children running up & down corridors, screaming & acting up. Then the room next door had very loud volume TV all night one night!!!

We had an awesome stay. Staff were very friendly and room was very clean and comfortable. My only negative would be we booked 2 rooms both for 2 adults and 1 child, and only had 2 bath towels in each room. Otherwise it was a great stay. We will definitely be back.

If you’re in Cairns it’s not for staying in the hotel. Staff was very accommodating. Rooms are smallish but clean. AC worked.

6/10 Good

We had a 3 day stay. The property is close to the night market, restaurants, church and mosque. It is fairly nice. Lots of space, closet space, kitchen sink and utensils. The staff is super nice and friendly.11q It does need an upgrade. The balcony had an old patio set. The beds are really old. There were a lot of bugs, ants and spiders in the room. The room did not get serviced. We left a "refresh our room" door tag, but the room did not get any service. We came back to a room with unmade beds and messy floor. As a result the number of bugs and spiders increased and also came into our suitcases. Free parking on street is limited. Hotel parking is paid

4/10 Fair

The member of the staff that did my check-in and check-out was rude and arrogante with no skill to work at a front desk. Mercure Cairns is also quite expensive comparatively with other hotels that provide better accommodation, nicer pools and common areas for similar price or less. The lift was broken during my stay. Car park is an extra cost whilst most of the hotels of similar category in Cairns provide free parking.

Poor & overpriced experience
Poor experience for three reasons; - Cleanliness was poor; you could see dust on the shelves where they clearly hadn't cleaned for ages & the floor can't have been mopped as it left our feet/socks dirty. - The WiFi was useless - Not very comfortable night sleep as the bed was on wheels so moved around & you could hear all the other guests doors slamming. - The staff were unfortunately completely clueless about basic things like how to operate the laundry machine or if early check in was possible. This would've been fine if this was a really budget hotel but we paid £150 night for it! So very overpriced for what it is.

The Mercure is well positioned, only a short walk to the Esplanade and the train station for our trip to Kuranda. The staff were lovely, we had dinner 2 nights, having the specials available on those nights which we enjoyed. We also had breakfast 3 mornings which we also enjoyed. The meals/pool area was a great place to relax. Overall we were very happy with our stay and would stay again when next visiting Cairns.
