Sightseeing in Ubud

- Elephant Cave

It is an archaeological site of significant historical value that makes it a special place to visit. You do not need more than an hour to descend to its relic-filled courtyard and view the rock-wall carvings, a central meditational cave, bathing pools and fountains. The main grounds are down a flight of steps from the roadside and parking area, which is lined with various art and souvenir shops and refreshment kiosks. Upon reaching the base you will come across a large ‘wantilan’ meeting hall and an assortment of large old stone carvings, some restored to their former full glory. The pool, excavated in 1954, features five out of supposedly seven statues depicting Hindu angels holding vases that act as waterspouts.

- Ubud Monkey Forest

Also known as the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, the nature reserve and Hindu temple is a very popular tourist attraction. Many visitors come so they can take a closer look at the Balinese macaques who inhabit this sanctuary. Be careful though! Many times, they will stealthily (or aggressively) take your possesions, such as fruits or your photographic camera.

Transportation in Ubud

Surrounded by such dense, flourishing jungle, Ubud feels like an isolated urban wonderland - but it’s actually very easy to get to. Catch a flight to Ngurah Rai International Airport - the gateway to Bali - based just south of Denpasar. Fly in from dozens of destinations across Asia and Australia - there’s even a flight from Amsterdam. From there, simply hop in a taxi at the airport - make sure to take one from the official taxi office - and sit back as you’re whizzed the 1 hour 15 minutes to Ubud. Once there, you can take shared shuttle buses to get around the main sights. Alternatively, motorcycle rentals are a popular - and fun - way to get around.
