Exploring Bandung

Bundung is one of the largest cities in Indonesia. The capital city of West Java caters to an ever-growing population of more than 2.5 million citizens. Because of its mild year-round temperatures, Bandung experiences a heavy influx of tourists. The surrounding Parahyangan Mountains give it a cool climate and vegetative landscape, adding to the appeal of this cultured city.

Bandung first came to prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries when Dutch colonialists used the area for plantation farming. The town prospered thanks to its tea and coffee plantations which paved the way for continuous expansion over the last two centuries. Today, Bandung has developed into an important Indonesian city, boasting a financial centre, a major national university, and a booming textile industry. The increase in recent tourism trends has seen a revitalisation of the city’s hotel industry.

Sightseeing in Bandung

- Bandung Zoo

Located in the northern reaches of the city of Bandung is the local zoo. It currently stands as one of the largest and most important zoological facilities in Southeast Asia, offering tremendous animal exhibits for the entire family to enjoy. In addition to the fauna on site, there are plenty of beautiful landscaped gardens that provide visitors with an attractive setting. A large range of local and regional animal species alike are housed within the park. Several hotel options lie less than one kilometre from the park, including the high-end Galeri Ciumbuleuit Hotel and the affordable favehotel Premier Cihampelas.

- Geological Museum

Housed within a 1920s Art Deco-style building, Bandung’s Geological Museum is an unassuming but interesting landmark. Inside are three main rooms, each with an array of rocks, fossils, and collections that relate to the history of the area and human development since pre-historic times. It is open every day except Fridays between 09:00 and 15:00.

Transportation in Bandung

For a large city, Bandung has a relatively weak public transportation system. This can be somewhat frustrating for tourists as there is no transit, tram, or even large bus network. The most widely used form of public transportation is the angkot, which is a type of minibus that provides regular routes across the city. These minibuses can be difficult to catch as their routes are generally not posted anywhere. The DAMRI bus system is available for long-distance connections.
