The Cathedral is located in the Ile de la Cite. The Ile de la Cité is a natural island located on the Seine River in Paris between the Rive Gauche (Left Bank) and Rive Droite (Right Bank). The historic and geographical center of intramural Paris, The Ile de la Cité was the site of the original settlement of the city by the ancient Celtic tribe known as the Parisii in the 3th century BC. Later, the island was the center of the medieval city. Visitors will probably also want to check out the Palais de Justice, built in the eighteenth century to house the French equivalent of the Supreme Court. At this same site sat the early seat of Roman government as well as the palace from the Gothic period. Part of the Palais contains a structure known as the Conciergerie, a former prison that housed Marie Antoinette before her execution.
