Top neighbourhoods in Bilbao

Abando
Abando combines Bilbao's business buzz with cultural treasures like the Guggenheim and Fine Arts Museums. Stroll through Plaza Moyua to soak up the neighborhood's blend of modern glass towers and traditional Basque architecture. Riverfront paths invite leisurely walks while the bustling streets reveal a vibrant art scene that captures the city's creative spirit. Dining options range from quick pintxo bars to upscale Basque restaurants perfect for both casual meals and business dinners. Getting around couldn't be easier with Moyua and Indautxu metro stations plus the main Abando railway terminal connecting you to Madrid and Barcelona. Most attractions are within walking distance of the area's contemporary hotels.

Casco Viejo
Bilbao's Casco Viejo feels like a medieval time capsule where cobblestone streets lead to unexpected discoveries. The impressive Santiago Cathedral towers over charming plazas while the Art Deco Mercado de la Ribera buzzes with local energy. Duck into traditional pintxos bars to taste authentic Basque cuisine or explore fascinating spots like the Museum of Archaeology and Arriaga Theatre. Getting around is best done on foot, with the metro and tram stations connecting you to modern Bilbao when needed. Historic buildings have been lovingly converted into boutique hotels and pensiones with plenty of character. The Nervión River provides a scenic backdrop for this walkable district where centuries-old traditions are still very much alive.

Indautxu
Indautxu combines Bilbao's financial muscle with surprisingly refined cultural touches. Sleek office buildings stand alongside elegant Belle Époque architecture while you stroll Gran Vía's upscale boutiques. The beautiful Doña Casilda Park leads you straight to the Fine Arts Museum where classical columns invite curious minds inside. Pintxo bars showcase authentic Basque flavours around every corner. Getting around couldn't be easier with three metro stations connecting you to Bilbao's highlights. Business travellers appreciate the luxury hotels with executive perks, while culture seekers enjoy being steps away from concert halls and museums. The area balances professional polish with genuine Basque warmth.

Iralabarri
Iralabarri gives you a front-row seat to authentic Bilbao life without the tourist circus. This working-class area charms with narrow cobblestone streets winding uphill past cream-colored buildings with wrought-iron balconies. Traditional bars serve up delicious pintxos and local txakoli wine while neighbors chat in Euskera. Family-run pensions and budget-friendly guesthouses make staying here easy on your wallet. Metro Line 1 connects you to city centre attractions, though the steep terrain demands good walking shoes. The area quiets down early, perfect for travellers seeking genuine Basque culture without the late-night party scene.

Uribarri
Perched on a hillside, Uribarri rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramas of Bilbao from Etxebarria Park. This authentic Basque area feels wonderfully removed from tourist crowds, with tree-lined streets, traditional architecture, and local pintxos bars serving regional specialities at area prices. Monte Artxanda offers peaceful nature escapes just steps from urban life. Getting around is straightforward with Metro Bilbao's Line 1 running frequently, though the steep terrain makes for challenging but scenic walks. Accommodation options are primarily local guesthouses and apartments that cost less than city centre stays while providing genuine cultural experiences.

The Artist Grand Hotel of Art
"From the moment we arrived the service was exceptional. The hotel is spectacular and our room was exactly as shown and spotlessly presented. The staff are truly exceptional, everyone from reception to housekeeping. I travel by motorcycle and the secure underground parking provided perfect peace of mind. Valet parking is available if you are nervous about tight underground car parks. Taking breakfast each morning on the rooftop terrace is a delightful way to start each day and the play of light over the Guggenheim, across the road, is mesmerising. I also used the room service and like the other restaurants on site it was surprisingly good value. I cannot recommend the hotel highly enough 10 out of 10."
Hotel ILUNION San Mamés
"Since we didn't arriveuntil midnight, we were very happy that someone was there to let us in. Since we stayed only day, it's probably not fair for us to try and rate this hotel. It served our need and I would recommend the hotel to anyone."
Hesperia Bilbao
"The staff was accommodating, welcoming, and helpful from start to finish. Thank you for making us feel welcome! Bilbao is truly one of one."
Hotel Sercotel Coliseo
"This is our second time staying in this hotel. It is a very conveniently located, clean and pleasant hotel to stay in. Our dog was also welcome. Having not chosen to include the breakfast, access to a coffee in the morning was a little awkward. The staff in the dining room were not very enthusiastic about providing this service. This was our only disappointment."
Barceló Bilbao Nervión
"The location was very good . The hotel lounge & bar was very good. Breakfast had a good selection of food however air condition & safety box were not working."
Radisson Collection Bilbao
"We had a wonderful stay at the Radisson Collection Hotel in the heart of Bilbao. The hotel is small, cozy, and beautifully designed, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. The location is absolutely perfect — right in the center of Bilbao, within easy walking distance of the main attractions, restaurants, shops, and beautiful streets of the city. It was so convenient to explore Bilbao without needing a car or public transportation. Our room was stylish, comfortable, and very well maintained, and the hotel had a lovely intimate feeling rather than feeling large or impersonal. The staff were friendly, professional, and attentive, which made our stay even more enjoyable. Overall, this is a wonderful choice if you are looking for a beautiful, comfortable, and centrally located hotel in Bilbao. We truly enjoyed our stay and would happily come back again!"
Batimont Suites & Apartments
"Great location in a great city to visit. Very close to the water and the historic old town, and a 15 minute walk to the Guggenheim. Plenty of good dining options in the neighborhood. The room was clean, well-appointed, and comfortable. We would stay here again."
Mercure Bilbao Jardines De Albia
"All the staff were very helpful and friendly. The cafeteria/bar was small but never really busy, service was great! Our room was a good size. Location was excellent for walking around, close to everything."
Hotel Melia Bilbao
"Everything was great! Especially during the annual festival week. They made sure that we knew of everything happening so that our experience could be a greater one."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Bilbao
- Book for the cheapest times: The most affordable time to visit Bilbao is during January, February, and December, when hotel prices are lower. For those on a budget, staying for at least 2 to 3 days is recommended to fully appreciate the city’s key historical and cultural landmarks. Visitors can explore various attractions, including museums, galleries, and theatres, as well as enjoy leisurely walks through the city, delightful cafes, and vibrant shopping areas. This way, travellers can experience the rich heritage of Bilbao while ensuring their trip remains great value for money.
- Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: To uncover potential last-minute deals for accommodation in Bilbao, begin by exploring the Deals or Last-Minute Deals sections on Hotels.com, where you may discover discounted rates on hotels as your travel date approaches. By enabling email alerts or push notifications, you could stay informed about flash sales and exclusive promotions, ensuring you don’t miss opportunities to save on Bilbao hotels. Additionally, the Smart Shopping tool available via the app allows you to compare hotel prices and amenities, helping you make informed choices. If prices drop or rooms become available, you'll be the first to know for your last-minute getaway.
- Be flexible with dates: Prices can fluctuate depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so being flexible with your travel dates may help you save on your stay in a hotel in Bilbao. For those in search of distinctive accommodations, boutique hotels can provide a more personalised experience and potentially better value. When you book through Hotels.com, we’ll inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If the price leans towards the higher end, we may suggest more economical dates to help you find the best deal.
- Consider your location: Hotels situated near the city centre generally tend to be more expensive, but thanks to Bilbao's superb public transport links, you may discover a more affordable independent hotel a bit further out that remains well-connected. For those eager to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even some of the lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money to be found. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
