We had a wonderful 3 nights at The Sands. The property has so much character and commands one of the most picturesque spots in NZ. The staff are charming and go out of their way to make your stay special, great food in the restaurant also. It’s a special place to experience, staffed by a lovely bunch of people.

Good hotel choice in Orewa
Overall good hotel right at the water. We had a room without sea view, quiet with parking directly in front of the room. Bed was super comfy, however the room could've had a little more thought put into it. There were no electrical outlets next to the bed, plus the switch for the night stand lights could not be reached when lying in bed. The windows could not be closed, so we had bugs inside. The bathroom did not have a fan to expel the moist air, which causes problems on the ceiling. In addition to that, the joints in the shower could use some extended cleaning or replacement. Overall good (8/10) but some room for improvement.

The spa was cold when we arrived. The spa water had a bad odour - like it had not been cleaned and the water had been sitting for a long time. There was sand in the bottom of the spa. It was a shame as we booked to be able to use the spa pool. Some of the bench top surfaces were sticky. The Villa we stayed in was tidy. The grounds and staff were lovely.

Was a great location, right on the waterfront with views out to the Heads. The lighting around the complex was terrible - including nothing being lit up at the roadside/driveway, so if you were trying to find it in the dark, it would be difficult. Prices in the restaurant were steep for what was on offer. Overall the complex was just looking a little tired and dated - but it met our basic needs.

VERY disappointed in this hotel. I booked the Villa goong by the photos online. What a big mistake that was! The unit was tired and basically a big let down. We had NO cutlery or plates in the unit to eat off and there were no spare blankets as it got a bit cool in the night. Outside the villa was scruffy and needed some TLC. This hotel needs a good makeover to justify the room rate I paid @ $333.00/night! We are now staying in Paihia and have cutlery, plates, spare blankets and the unit is clean and a great deal @ half the price with a room rate of $159.00/night. We would never stay at the Sands Hotel again.

Our stay was a complete disaster. A staff member took our room which we'd booked weeks before, and gave us a much inferior room, that the air conditioner wasnt going. Obviously this place has no policy in place to keep a room that has had the booking confirmed. Beware. They will give your booking to someone else, and give you something much inferior. I will NEVER go there again, it was all so upsetting.
