Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro but is often missed by travellers who head straight for the country’s beautiful beaches or rugged mountains. Exploring the city, you’ll find a blend of nature and modernity – the landmark Millennium Bridge over the Morača River is a fine example. Although many of the buildings in Podgorica were built quite recently, the old town offers a lot of history bearing silent witness to the troubles experienced during WWII.

Besides a buzzing café culture, Podgorica has some cultural highlights where you can learn about Montenegran heritage. These include a number of different theatres, a host of museums and even an archaeological research centre. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can explore slightly out of town to Lake Skadar National Park, which medieval monasteries and native Dalmatian wildlife call home.
