Excellent! Eric and Susie were wonderful hosts! Eric was full of knowledge of things to do around the Island. The place was clean, comfortable and convenient to get to. I would highly recommend!

Nice little B&B! Breakfast was nothing amazing but good and staff were knowledge about the Island as they have been out there for over 30 years!

Perfect place to get away if you like hiking the rugged lava shoreline and watching whales from the lanai. Singing frogs and pounding surf lull you to sleep at night. Definitely off the beaten path but the host recommended many enjoyable restaurants and activities a short drive away. Low key and friendly.

4/10 Fair

They should do a better effort to make a decent breakfast. This is not what we expect when book a B&B. a quarter of a muffin and a mini begal seating beside the driveway and surronded by black flies is not nice. The place is overpriced for what you get. The frogs were so noisy that we had to close all the windows at night.

Alakai B&B
It was okay. Smaller than we expected. The internet was not working and there was no TV service. Kinda pricey for the size of the room. The bathroom is the highlight of the rental.

We felt so "welcomed" by Suzy and Erich at Ala Kai Bed and Breakfast we considered moving in!! We loved The Bamboo Room. It was perfect for the two of us celebrating our 54th Wedding Anniversary. We've traveled a lot over the years. A tropical setting like this is what we prefer. We fell asleep and woke up to chirping birds and croaking frogs...so relaxing! Breakfast on the Lanai - with an ocean view - was perfect and filled with conversations with Erich and Suzy about the area and suggestions for places to go and explore during our two week visit. You DO NOT want to pass up an opportunity to stay at this lovely Hilo area property on the "laid back side" of the Big Island.

I found this location on Travelocity when booking a package deal. I saw the ratings were very good, so that made it easy choice. I was not disappointed. I felt like I was at home. The owners Erich and Suzy live at the location and were very nice and welcoming. They made it there goal to educate me about the island, pointing out the great locations to visit. They always had coffee and breakfast ready in the morning, greeting the guests as they arrived. Great views of the Pacific ocean from their front yard and porch. Bedrooms were spacious and had fans and A/C if needed. I would recommend this location to friends and family. When I return to visit family in the future I will attempt to book a room here at Ala Kai BNB. Thank you for the great time!

Erich was so friendly and easy to talk to. Stayed in the cottage, parked in the carport. Loved all the windows (with screens!). Looked forward to breakfast each morning and the suggestions Erich provided for the day. Pool was lovely and road was quiet. Ala Kai was truly paradise and we can't wait to return! was perfect, great hot water

Suzy and Erich were terrific hosts. Friendly and full of helpful suggestions for sightseeing and dining. The 2-bedroomcottage we stayed in was fully equipped and quiet. Simple healthy breakfasts out on spacious porch. Good location for visiting Volcano National Park. Airport was a short drive. Highly recommend.

2/10 Poor

I really wanted to like this place. The property is a two-level house owned by Eric and his wife and is across the road from the ocean. Pros: Owner Eric is a congenial and helpful host. We arrived with no car, and because there are no restaurants nearby, he offered me a ride to buy food at local supermarket. The room was small but the bathroom and shower were spacious. Cons: I was charged an extra $50 for my ten-year old daughter, although we weren't advised of this charge at the time of booking. At 10:30 am on our last day, Eric's wife came to our room to inquire when we would be leaving. She seemed quite concerned we would not leave on time, claiming that taxis and ubers take up to five hours to make a pick up, which was unwarranted and annoying because I advised her that we had already arranged for a taxi pick-up within 30 minutes. Then at 10:59 am, one minute prior to the 11:00 am check out she again appeared and seeing we had already packed our luggage, she demanded, quite rudely, we immediately vacate the room on the pretext that the cleaning crew was scheduled to enter at 11:00 am on the dot. She also demanded we move our luggage away from the house and onto the driveway in front. At 11:15 am when our taxi arrived no cleaning crew had arrived to clean the room. My wife and I felt disrespected because Eric's wife never thanked us for our stay nor wished us a pleasant trip. She also for no reason kicked us out of our room one minute before the check-out time.

Best hosts ever! Staying with Erich and Suzy was like hanging out at a friend’s vacation home. Close to Hilo and Pahoa and not too far to Volcano either. Breakfast was everything you’d expect in a continental breakfast including fresh local fruit.

Cute stay along the coast
My wife and I stayed in the Bamboo room. It was a cute little private room along the coast. Greeted by Slash, the cat, and the many wonderful frogs at night, this stay was very memorable. I wish I could have stayed longer to enjoy more of the amenities from the little picnic basket to the poolside breakfasts. Eric was a very hospitable host and a pleasure to chat with. I would definitely stay again and recommend towards others.

Ala Kai was a perfect base for our stay! The location looking out over the cliffs is gorgeous, especially sunrise. The Bamboo room is cozy and very comfortable and well equipped with everything you might need! The pool was so refreshing after days hiking in Volcano. And the hosts are so friendly and helpful! It's around a 20 min drive to restaurants and groceries and less than an hour to Volcano...worth it for the peaceful location.

The Ohana Cottage was perfect for our family vacation. I always dread sleeping anywhere but home as I have a sleep number bed, but the king size bed in the cottage was so comfy. Having the amenities of home while on vacation was really helpful. The owners were super friendly and helpful. The distance from town allows for amazing views of the stars while the geckos sing to you.

Almost perfect.
We have the entire cottage, including the car port, which is very nice. We love the fresh morning breakfast and the kids could not have enough of Suzy's fresh baked fruit breads. The location is excellent being just 2 houses from the end of the street, so it is very quiet. We have daily walk to the end of the street, thru the little ( and very short ) hike to a very beautiful sea cliff. It's an amazing view and almost always vacant. Seeing the powerful waves crashing the cliff is mesmerizing. The treated rain water swimming pool is refreshingly great. We bought some food from the store and cooked and grilled at the unit. Great to taste fresh local food and hot from the grill salmon. Unit does not have AC and the insect can be loud during the night. This is the reason for 'almost' perfect. I wish the unit has AC so we can have the choice of closing the windows at night and not being so hot. Both Erich and Suzy are extremely nice. Thank you. The kids "rated" this BnB higher than other high end hotels (Sheraton, Hilton, Marriott in Kona and Waikiki) that we stayed on this trip. It was a great and memorable vacation for sure.
