Perfect weekend hotel in Wellington
We stayed for one Saturday night, arriving by car around 7pm. They had already emailed comprehensive instructions about check-in's after 5pm, and they described our welcome exactly. After a few mins we had closed the hustle and bustle of Wellington's evening rush behind our bedroom door. But to call it a bedroom is an understatement. Our deluxe room had heaps of space, a huge well appointed bathroom (twin sinks and showers!), and plenty of comfy chairs. Although styled in turn of the century NZ decoration with wood panels and colonial skirting, the important features were very up to date. A plush bed to sink into, posh new looking sinks and taps, air con, and a oil heater. The room included a well stocked fridge and writing desk, plus opening windows. If you are a fan of old lifts or elevators then you'll need to take a ride in the Wellesley's one. It is self service with sliding cage door and all the charm of its pre-century origin. Don't worry though it was much safer than many lifts we've used and pretty quick as well. But a bit of a narrow entrance if you don't heft the door wide. Apart from a few blown bulbs in the elaborate multi-blub lights, and our room could hear the lift workings a little - there wasn't anything really to complain about - especially when you add in the great price and easy parking (free after 6pm on the street outside). Recommended hotel and they are doing it up so help save a charming old building for future travellers to enjoy.

Fantastic location but old & tired
Room was really nice - comfy bed, large bathroom & HUGE shower. Colonial style but clean and modern where necessary. Welcome was friendly and efficient. Elevator is really slow and the old style with the cage & sliding door. Authentic for the boutique style of this hotel but also a nuisance to wait for and operate. It was also very noisy so could be heard from my room - waking me a few times in the night. The exit was the disappointing part and I worry for the safety of guests in this hotel if there was ever a major fire. The main stairs and the fire exits are not well marked so were hard to find. On my way to check out, the elevator took so long that i decided to take the stairs but could only find back emergency stairs - which were steep, dirty and had very minimal signage throughout. Once you're at the ground level there is no obvious route out of the building. This I personally considered a major safety risk because finding and navigating it during an actual fire could be very difficult (especially with smoke, panic & confusion). Upon registering my concern with the receptionist, her first response was to laugh. Once she realised I was serious, she said she "would pass on the message" however didn't write anything down or take my details so i feel my concerns fell on deaf ears. Not the attitude or customer service i would expect of a high end hotel. Really disappointing end to my stay. I hope they take this seriously because i sure did.

Old-fashioned and comfortable
This little old-fashioned hotel suited my purposes: quiet, conveniently located near the university, and friendly. In terms of decor, it is a bit worn, but it has character and provided a nice break from slick hotels, both boutique and chain. The restaurant on the ground floor served excellent breakfast. I saw people enjoying drinks both there and in the lobby in the early evening during the week, but the restaurant was closed for the entire weekend. Not the greatest convenience. The front-desk staff were helpful but didn't seem particularly informed, as one might find in a large hotel. Don't expect a concierge to help you. The front desk also had limited hours, so on the day of my early departure I was on my own calling a taxi. But they were helpful when they were there!

Our new favouite
We have stayed at a number of hotels in Wgtn over the last 4 years our son has been at University. This is our number one spot from now on. It is the quiet end of town so we managed the best sleeps we have had in Wgtn. Loved the bath which was a real treat. Also the circular table in the room made for a great working desk for my husband due to its size and location. We were able to set up two laptops plus have a cup of tea each! The air conditioning unit which we could control was a god send rather than the hotel set the temperature. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Having an internal cafe which served wine in front of a fire was delicious.

Old world charm in Wellington CBD
If you want something different from the 'cookie-cutter' chain hotels, this hotel is for you. A heritage listed building, it is tucked away on a quiet side street, but located very close to Wellington train station and bus stops (including a stop for the airport flyer). I stayed in a standard room and it was massive. The bathroom was also incredibly spacious and luxurious, with two sinks, a claw-foot bath and a separate full-size shower. The hotel was able to give me a late checkout at no extra charge. The staff were friendly and helpful. I was a bit concerned that it would be cold as there didn't seem to be individual heating/air conditioning in the rooms, but it stayed at a pleasant temperature my entire stay. Despite being an older building, there is a lift so you don't have to worry about carrying luggage upstairs.
