Antiques in Bangkok almost always refer to modern reproductions of original pieces. Genuine Thai antiques are rare and expensive. Strict government regulations and rigorous efforts are in place to curb illegal trade (of works stolen from ancient temples). Unless you’re a passionate antique collector, replicas are just as good – and probably more suitable – for decorative purposes.
Many stores in Bangkok stock both genuine antiques and more modern reproductions intended for less discerning shoppers. Perhaps most ubiquitous is Buddhist art reflecting distinctive styles of the Kingdom's past eras. Check out our guide to the best places to shop for antiques in Bangkok.
