Exploring Chennai (Madras

The history of India's sixth-most populous city, Chennai, officially started in 1640, the year the British established a small trading post by the name of Fort St George on the Bay of Bengal. Today, the city once known as Madras may have officially changed its name, but its unique history and culture remains very much intact. As one of the planet's fastest-growing cities, Chennai has grown into a modern tourism destination complete with a wide selection of sumptuous five-star hotels.

Visitors wanting to spend their stay in Chennai in the lap of luxury can stay in the heart of the city at the Taj Coromandel or closer to Chennai International Airport and Guindy National Park at the Hilton Chennai. No matter which area of the city they stay in, however, they will never be too distant from any of its main attractions. One of the most spacious parks in South Asia, the world's second-longest beachfront coastline, and the state of the art Birla Planetarium are all found here.

Sights nearby

About 33,000 temples stand alongside Chennai's historic mosques and churches as well as the tiniest national park and first zoo in the whole of India. A score of fun-filled amusement parks and beaches line the East Coast Road.

National Art Gallery
In 1907, the former Victoria Memorial Hall became the home of the National Art Gallery, whose red sandstone exterior is nearly as impressive as its interior exhibits. Tiny Mughal and Rajput paintings as well as exquisite Tanjore glass paintings are among the most unique masterpieces displayed within the gallery's four distinct art collections. Another prominent display consists of Indian 11th and 12th century handicrafts.

Arinjar Anna Zoological Park
The first zoo ever to open in India was first established on Chennai's outskirts in 1855 and attracts plenty of visitors to this day. Visitors can travel around this zoological park's giant open moated island enclosure, home to more than 170 kinds of birds and animals, aboard battery operated or lion safari vehicles. Elephant rides are also available at this attraction often referred to as the Vandalur Zoo.

Government Museum
One of the very first museums in India opened its doors in the Egmore area of Chennai in 1857. Today, the Government Museum boasts 46 different galleries withiin its six independent buildings. Geology, archaeology, botany, and zoology all have their own sections within Government Museum, which also features galleries of bronze and art in addition to a children's museum. Guide services are provided at no cost twice each day.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Establishments require at least 21 bedrooms to obtain the right to serve liquor in Chennai. Therefore, the vast majority of the city's bars and pubs are situated within upscale hotels like the five-star Taj Club House. Live music often accompanies the diverse meals served at hotel restaurants, but cheaper vegetarian fare can also easily be enjoyed here. There are also a plethora of places to shop, from the traditional Pondy Bazaar to modern shopping centres such as Spencer Plaza or Express Avenue.

Public transport

Among India's airports, only Delhi and Mumbai handle more passengers than the two terminals at Chennai International Airport, which can be reached non-stop by suburban train from Chennai Central or Egmore rail stations as well as from the huge Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus. There are a total of four suburban rail routes throughout the city in addition to a wide network of very affordable Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses. However, auto-rickshaws remain the most unusual way to travel throughout Chennai.
