Exploring San Diego

San Diego is California's second-biggest city, but still manages to maintain its laid-back beachside atmosphere, especially compared to larger and faster-paced Los Angeles. This coastal city's Old Town was the location of California's first Spanish mission, while the lively Gaslamp Quarter is the heart of the city's nightlife scene. Several green spaces and museums surround the highly rated San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park. Year-round warm and sunny weather is another main draw in California's southernmost city, where Paradise Point Resort and Spa is just one of many luxury retreats overlooking the Pacific Ocean coastline. Mission Beach, La Jolla, and the Coronado peninsula are among the city's leading sunbathing and surfing spots. However, those in the city on business may prefer to stay in hotels closer to the airport and downtown area, like the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, where guests can easily walk to PETCO Park and the San Diego Convention Center. Golfers, on the other hand, can not only tee off, but also enjoy wine tasting and spa treatments at the four-star Rancho Bernardo Inn San Diego - A Golf and Spa Resort.

Sights nearby

The border crossing separating San Diego from Tijuana, Mexico, ranks among the busiest on Earth; the two cities are within reasonable walking distance of each other. Most day trip destinations outside San Diego, on the other hand, are easiest to reach by automobile, including the popular Legoland California theme park. Legoland California
The most famous attraction in the community of Carlsbad, north of San Diego, is the first Legoland Park situated outside of Europe. The Playtown playground in the Duplo section may keep the park's youngest visitors well entertained, but older children might prefer to emulate more adult professions like flying, driving, and fighting fires in Fun Town. The Miniland USA miniature park was constructed with over 40 million Lego pieces, while Dino Island's most exciting attraction is the Coastersaurus ride. The water park here was the first to open in any Legoland park. Mission Bay Park
SeaWorld San Diego may be the best known attraction within Mission Bay Park, but the largest of United States man-made water parks is also home to much of San Diego's most breathtaking scenery and relaxing cycling trails. Cyclists up for bigger challenges can test themselves against competitors around the world during the trial series which takes place on Fiesta Island. The Mission Bay Playground boasts plenty of room for kite flying as well as an impressive pirate ship replica where children can play. Tijuana
San Diego's Mexican neighbour may have had a somewhat seedy reputation in the past, but Tijuana has now become one of the safest cities to visit along Mexico's border with the United States. San Diego residents and visitors are just a quick automobile ride, public transit journey, or walk away from Tijuana's many 'gringo friendly' bars, shops, and restaurants. Many visitors also choose to head further south to Rosarito and Ensenada's famous beaches.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Virtually every cuisine on Earth can be found in San Diego's restaurants, but seafood and Mexican remain the most frequently spotted dining establishments. Many Mexican meals, especially in the Old Town, are accompanied by live mariachi music performances and margaritas. Despite the city's growing craft-brewing scene, the liveliest nightspots are still the Gaslamp Quarter and Pacific Beach. Bazaar del Mundo, whose main theme is Mexican, is just one of many outdoor shopping complexes situated throughout this constantly warm California city. Every Tuesday afternoon, the Ferry Marketplace hosts a popular farmers' market.

Public transport

The San Diego Trolley, the most famous of the city's public transit options, is in fact a light rail network which stops at the majority of major landmarks and tourist attractions. The Blue Line reaches as far as the Mexican border, while the Orange Line links downtown San Diego with the inland suburbs of El Cajon and La Mesa. Santee and the Mission Valley can be reached from the downtown area aboard the Green Line. Bus service is less reliable and reachable outside of the downtown area. Cycling is another popular way to travel in this constantly warm city.
