New Delhi Shopping Guide – where and what to shop and buy

Find a place to stay

An essential Indian trading centre since medieval times, New Delhi has very much continued in that vein, with shopping at the top of many a traveller’s agenda when visiting the city. Whether you’re diving head first into the hustle and haggle of the bargain-laden markets – weaving through the crowds and basking in the pungent chaos – or browsing higher-end boutiques before a classy meal, you’re guaranteed a memorable time.
Sarojini Nagar Market

Packing an impressive hoard of designer labels at rock-bottom prices, Sarojini Nagar Market is a favourite with fashionistas from both home and abroad. As a last minute flogging zone for cancelled lines and damaged products, the stalls are literally spilling over with top high street and designer brands. You’ll want to check for faults and arrive with your best haggling game if you’re going to bag some of the coolest bargains in town. Sweets and vegetable markets are also nearby.

 Connaught Place

Replete with busy malls and outlets crammed with a gleaming selection of major international brands, as well as boutiques and street vendors catering to most other retail needs, Connaught Place is known for stocking just about everything under the sun. Plenty of fine restaurants serving mouth-watering fare from around the world can be found throughout, while a spread of green space in which to catch your breath is never far away. Palika Bazaar is a vibrant underground market in the area that’s well worth a visit.

Chandi Chowk

An inexpensive foray via rickshaw into Chandi Chowk has to be at the top of anyone’s list on a visit to the Indian capital. This mottled old market place has been around for more than 3 centuries and is home to a great array of stalls ideal for snapping up something cheap and quirky: vintage jewellery, kaleidoscopic fabrics, sweets and spices of every shade – you name it they’ve got it. Be prepared to haggle, haggle, haggle.

Kahn Market

A favourite shopping destination with Delhi’s elite and expat populations, this famously exclusive market is brimming top-quality clothing showrooms, familiar chain stores, neat boutiques, and excellent lifestyle shops in which to part with some cash and pick up something nice. Situated not far from India Gate, you’ll find great bookshops, specialist gourmet produce, and a few comfortingly commercial fast food joints. Prices are at the city’s top-end.

Paharganj Main Bazaar

For some of the tastiest looking price tags New Delhi has to offer, an expedition to the endearingly dilapidated and ramshackle Main Bazaar of Paharganj is a good shout. Labelled the backpacker district, or the traveller ghetto, this part of the city is ripe for experiencing some rustic Indian culture. Reaching for about a kilometre, the rough and ready marketplace is loaded with clothes, crafts, textiles, incense, and religious statues. Browse away to your heart's content.
