At the port in Aarhus, you can find the imposing culture house, Dokk1, which in Danish is pronounced Dokken. Since 2015, it's been home to the city's main library, Citizen Service and a wealth of events, exhibitions and cultural offers of all kinds. It's difficult to overlook the impressive construction in the city skyline, with its sharp edges and blank surfaces, which elegantly reflect the sea and the sky.

In the equally stylish interior, students meet up to study and relax, while families with small children enjoy the numerous creative child and play areas. In other words, there are endless opportunities to use the numerous rooms and functions.

Highlights of Dokk1

Dokk1 is laid out as a study room, reading hall and meeting room, where you can sit in deep concentration. At the same time, there is room for cosiness and a good atmosphere. Grab lunch at the café, find one of the many nooks with nice seats or sit on the broad entrance stairs, which offer a view of the entire harbour area.

Apart from the permanent fixtures at Dokk1, the place also hosts a number of exciting cultural events. There is a broad selection, from creative workshops and art exhibitions to poetry slams and chess. You can also check the comprehensive calendar on the website – there should definitely be something to catch your interest.

Good to know about Dokk1

The modern culture centre is part of the construction Urban Mediaspace, which had the goal of converting the old industrial port into a modern and inviting city space along the water – and it was certainly a success. Explore the rest of the area with its fabulous view of the Port of Aarhus.

From Dokk1, you can continue north to Havnepladsen, where you can admire the water art installation called Endless Connection. This is a great place to take pictures for your Instagram feed, but watch out – it takes ingenuity to get in and out of the circles without being hit by the tall water walls.
