Poor Bath
The hotel is located on a volcano island and has a public bath. Right above the bath entrance it says in english "natural hot spring". However, when my wife and I tried the bath at opening time there was no water flowing in and the water was stagnant and covered with scum and hair. My wife was equally repulsed by the ladies bath. I have been to possibly 100 public baths in Japan over the years and this was the worst I have ever seen. When I asked the management they said they ship in the water by truck. Then they likely use pumps and filters to recycle the water. We looked at the bath water later and the condition was much better, but we didn't go in. The fact is this hotel does not have a true onsen. Being on Rishiri volcano island we were surprised and saddened. And as everyone in Japan knows, as highlighted in a recent TV report here, there is a problem with hotels and public baths misrepresenting the type of bath they have. Obviously this hotel is not honest about the bath to the guests. I was shocked that a place with such a wonderful ocean and mountain view location on a volcano island and the best seafood buffet dinner we have ever had would do this. We got a good rate on Hotels.com, so the bath wasn't a major problem, but if we had paid full price we would have been very upset. What a letdown.
