Royal Court is a decent place to stay. Not a fancy hotel but meets the basic requirement. Breakfast is good. Cleanliness can improve everywhere.

Nice but noisy.
It was a very noisy room. With no rubber seal between the window and the frame the noise level was excruciating. The location was great for the sites to be seen.

Business Hotel One Block from Train Station
This is a standard business hotel that is one block from the railroad station and, thus, very convenient for travelers arriving in and/or departing from Madurai by train. The hotel is also a 10-15 minute walk from Meenakshi Temple, which is nice. Other pluses: the rooms and lobby are attractive, and the breakfast buffet was good. But two negatives. First, the bathroom in the room was in significant need of renovation. The fundamental bathroom facilities all worked, but everything looked like it hadn't been updated in 30 years. Second, the service at the front desk was poor. The hotel did not respond to several emails I sent requesting information in advance of my visit and I got an endless run-around when trying to change money at the front desk ("please wait five minutes" and then, five minutes later, "please come back in an hour" and then, an hour later, "Not today -- our accountant has left for the day.") But if those two concerns are not a problem for you and you are ok with a hotel near the train station, then the Royal Court is fine.

Maybe a splurge after 90 days of backpacking?
Probably the Royal Court was once an attempt to be a grand hotel with marble floors and fancy entry hall, but now it is just plain sad and dirty. The faucets and the shower were defective, the carpets were all super stained, the front desk staff were grumpy and unhelpful, and the “concierge” could not speak English. We were directed to have breakfast in a dirty conference room, where no one came to help us with table or chairs or silverware or napkins, because the dining hall was full. The mattress was also smelly and there was a major sewer stench in the bathroom. On the good points, the laundry service was fast, same day service for two shirts, we didn’t get sick after having breakfast there and they give us ample amount of bottled water.

Pleasant stay, great location near train station
Had a pleasant stay at Royal Court Madurai. I had a comfortable room with a good bed, bathroom, air-con and wi-fi. Staff were happy to check me in early, and to arrange late checkout at a reasonable price. Laundry service was prompt and good. The location is excellent if arriving by train - it's just across the road from the Madurai central train station, and about 15 minutes walk from the Meenakshi Amman temple. Only slight disappointment was the restaurant - a fairly hit and miss buffet with only a limited range of drinks and no alcohol. But there are plenty of other places to eat nearby. I would stay again.

An acceptable stay
Royal Court is quite a well-known hotel to the local people. Even my Madurai friends recommended it. The stay was okay. The room was clean and acceptable, the A/C was working great, the water pressure was strong, nothing to complain about. However the bedding was too thin and the towels were very rough, but this is because the water in Madurai is very hard (it makes even the skin extremely dry). The internet service was not good - extremely slow and always down. Please note that Madurai has numerous electrical power failures daily, and this may affect the internet performance.

Dirty and noisy place
1. Complementary breakfast is always cold and when you order something from menu it takes about an hour to get your order. 2. Internet was free but it was really slow and kept loosing connection, so I wasn't able to do my work through internet. 3. With completely closed windows I was able to hear everything that was going on the street, and so as hotel located close to railway station it was noisy all night long, so you should forget about nice rest. 4. Towels in bathroom and bed linen looked grey instead of white. 5. Bathroom was really dirty so as dishes on coffee table. I regularly come to Madurai and usually stay in Fortune Pandian and I can say that with the same rate Pandian is several times better than Royal Court. I will never stay in Royal Court again.

bad choice for foreigners
If you are a foreigner (from the USA or Europe) it will be a bad choice for you to stay in Royal Court. We made this mistake and I’m writing that review because I don’t want anyone else to make the same mistake. Towels and bed linen look grey instead of white, shower curtain is all stained, so as bath itself and dishes at coffee table. With completely closed windows you can hear everything that is going on outside, and as hotel is located close to railway station it is really noisy during night, so you should forget about nice rest. Food for complimentary breakfast is all cold. There is system to heat it, but it doesn’t work properly. When you order something from regular menu it takes ages to get your order. But to be honest, if you were patient enough to wait for about an hour to get your order, food will be delicious. For sure, staff in restaurant (all of them – cooks, waiters) does better job here than housekeeping. Anyway, for foreigners that come to Madurai I can recommend Fortune Pandian to stay. Usually we stay in Pandian, but this coming my husband wanted to try “different place”, now he realizes himself that decision to stay in Royal Court was really a big mistake. Even Fortune isn’t the same level as we are used to see in our countries, but it is the best place to stay in Madurai. If you didn’t like staying in Pandian, it means that you had no chance to compare it with other Madurai hotels. As soon as you compare, you will agree with me.

2/10 Poor

Avoid like the plague
One of the worst hotel stays in my life - a notable achievement. Pros: hotel is located across from the train station and close to the temple. Cons: Terrible service, no maintenance of room, massive overbilling including re-billing of Expedia reservation at a higher rate. Issues: 1. The room had a variety of problems including a shower drain that backed up leaving me swimming in dirty water every time I took a shower. Despite my repeated requests to have this problem fixed it was not corrected till the last morning before I left. On the bright side, two of the three light bulbs didn't work making it harder to tell what I was swimming in. 2. I rented a car and driver for a day which consisted mostly of his asking for money for a variety of things including gas for the hotel car. He also informed me that we needed to return to the hotel by 6:00 PM when in fact I had the car until 8:30 in the evening. 3. The final bill was about four times what I expected with charges for the nights I had already payed Expedia (but at a much higher rate), room service for things I had never ordered and a large tip for the aforementioned driver. Finally despite being in the middle of vegetarian South India this hotel is Islamic in orientation and serves mostly Mughal cuisine from the North. The Superior Hotel one street over has a good roof top restaurant with a great view of the temple at night and is a far better choice if you want to be in this neighborhood.
