The Alcala, formerly known as The Riverleaf Inn, is definitely an underrated hotel gem in San Diego. With new management and newly renovated facilities, I couldn't be happier with the stays I have had. While its location may seem a bit off the beaten trail at first glance, it's literally a 15-minute drive away from just about everything San Diego has to offer. The upgraded rooms, new 24-hour common dining area, as well as a continental breakfast that has a myriad of options from delicious waffles to easy grab-and-go options like string cheese and yogurts, have been welcomed surprises. The new management has definitely done wonders for the aesthetics, overall comfort, and security of the hotel, but my main reason for staying here has always been the exceptional staff.
Raul, the morning front desk manager, is an integral part of this hotel and exudes professionalism, patience, and flexibility when dealing with patrons. He is wonderful, not only to chat with when checking in or out, but also goes above and beyond to meet the needs of the people staying at the hotel. He is a huge reason why I keep coming back to this hotel and has always made me feel welcomed and appreciated.
The house staff is diligent and professional, and I appreciate all they do.
I highly recommend The Alcala Hotel for anyone looking to stay in San Diego. Raul and the rest of the staff will definitely make sure your stay is comfortable, safe, and enjoyable.
