Quintessential perfectly preserved beautiful British Raj hill station hotel Darjeeling full of historical artefacts at the end of the mall with some views. The drive from Bogdogra airport took around 4 1/2 hours, some of the roads were runined by landslides, you will also need a visa to enter Sikkim, something we were not aware of. There is a daily helicopter which you can charter. The staff were extremely kind, most being able to speak at least a little English. We stayed 3 nights and took a day tour booked through the hotel, I would definitely recommend doing this.
