Learn more about Wasilla

Venture beyond the ordinary at Independence Mine State Historical Park, where abandoned gold mining buildings tell tales of Alaska's frontier days. Spot moose wandering through areas as casually as postal workers. The Iditarod Trail Headquarters celebrates the famous sleigh dog race with memorabilia that brings the grueling competition to life. Paddle Lake Lucile, where mountains create a photo-worthy backdrop. In winter, the Northern Lights dance overhead with such regularity that locals barely look up. Hatcher Pass offers hiking through alpine meadows in summer and world-class skiing in winter. Alaska Live Steamers delights with miniature train rides through the wilderness – a quirky attraction that perfectly captures this town's blend of frontier spirit and unexpected charm.

THIS is midnight in Alaska right now! I shot this at a place called Reflections Lake. It's just off the Glenn Highway in between Anchorage and Wasilla. The walk around the lake is mostly level, but sometimes gets washed out by high tide. A manmade lookout tower about halfway along the trail provides a stunning view of the Palmer Hay Flats. You can also access the Knik River from this highway exit.
