Where to stay near Zurich

Exploring Zurich

Zurich may not be Switzerland's national capital, but it is the capital of its namesake canton as well as the country's most populous city. Despite the city's staid reputation as one of the world's leading financial hubs, Zurich also boasts hundreds of bars, nightclubs, and restaurants within a relatively small space. The majority of tourist attractions, including more than 150 museums and art galleries, are situated between the Limmat River and Lake Zurich in the city's historic Old Town.

Zurich ranks as one of the costliest cities on Earth and the same can be said for many of its hotels. The city's central part contains its most affordable accommodation options such as Zic Zac Rock Hotel, a music themed establishment near the railway station, but the cheapest rooms fill up fast. Weekends bring the best deals, but those with deeper pockets can choose between riverfront establishments like the Zurich Marriott Hotel or places closest to the airport like Moevenpick Hotel Zuerich-Airport.

Sights nearby

Popular daytrip destinations from Zurich include Switzerland's national capital, Berne, and Basel, the European capital of culture where the German, French, and Swiss borders meet. Another nearby city, Lucerne, is most famous for its 14th century Chapel Bridge across the Reuss River.

Urania Observatory
This public observatory named after the astronomy muse in Greek mythology first opened in 1899. Today, the Urania Observatory's main attraction is the gigantic refracting telescope in the middle of its impressive tower building. The telescope and its dome were both fully renewed on the observatory's 100th anniversary. An observation tower faces Lake Zurich, the Alps, and the city skyline. Guided tours of the moon, stars, and solar system are available on clear evenings between Tuesday and Friday.

Zürich Zoologischer Garten
This extensive zoological garden, first founded in 1929, features over 2,200 animals of different species in addition to an outdoor aviary and aquarium. The Africa House, Exotarium, Elephant House, Masoala Rainforest, and lion enclosure are the zoo's main areas. The Zoolino Nature Workshop offers plenty of hands-on activities for children. A penguin parade takes place at noon each day during cooler weather.

An outdoor swimming pool and the impressive Chinese Gardens are the main reasons why this plant-filled lakeside park is so popular during Zurich's summer months. The cherry trees in the Chinese Gardens, built as a dedication to Zurich's twin city of Kunming, turn bright red in autumn and lovely shades of pink in spring. Exotic pavilions, bright lanterns, bamboo, and ponds filled with fish all make this park unique.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

Bahnhofsstrasse, Zurich's main shopping street, features some of the world's most exclusive Swiss chocolate shops and designer boutiques. However, younger shoppers with smaller budgets may prefer the trendier and more affordable Niederdorf or the budget shops of the Löwenstrasse. One of the city's busiest streets, In Gassen, contains many of Zurich's highest rated restaurants, but lower budget meals are easiest to find in pizzerias, eateries offering fixed price menus, and the University of Zurich complex. Neumarkt features most of the city's international restaurants. A total of 80 nightclubs and bars are situated in the city.

Public transport

The Zürcher Verkehrsverbund, or TVV, operates Zurich's very efficient and widespread public transit network. Advance ticket purchases are required before boarding any city buses or electric trams. As one of the world's busiest rail stations, Zurich's Hauptbahnhof handles more than 2,900 trains per day, but this is just one of over 20 rail stations in the city. Trains take no more than 12 minutes to travel from Zurich to the city's airport. Water taxis from one end of Lake Zurich to the other and Limmat River cruises are scenic ways to explore the city by water.
