Great downtown location - parking was challenging
This hotel is centrally situated very near the tram to the Botanical Garden, and very near the waterfront and museums and ferry wharf to the South Island, and only about a 20-min walk to fun shopping/restaurants/people-watching on Cuba Street. The older hotel has been very nicely updated, and the staff was very warm and helpful. We would definitely stay here again. (Wifi was slow, but that was true almost everywhere we stayed in NZ.) For us, the only down-side to this hotel was finding a nearby place to park and drop our belongings on our arrival. The hotel is on a busy dead-end street that had no available spots to park temporarily when we arrived, and there wasn't good signage from the hotel directing us to where we might park temporarily for the valet. Later we learned from the staff that other guests often did what we ended up doing, which was to circle the busy downtown area of one-way streets until we found a temporary place to park (and pay) and schlep our bags a couple of blocks. It wasn't a huge deal, we figured it out, but we're mentioning it because it was just a tad stressful of an arrival after a long drive. Also, it may be worth Googling other parking options before you arrive, since hotel valet parking was $45/day. We found convenient self-parking that cost $30 total for 3 days (Friday-Sunday). We shared our parking arrival experience with management, who responded quickly and kindly to our comments and said they would look into making improvements.

Nice Hotel, shame about restaurant
Stayed for one night after returning to Wellington from wineries. Nice spacious room with high ceiling, comfy bed and good bathroom. Nice breakfast buffet. Friendly, helpful staff at check in. Went to the Spring Restaurant for dinner after drinks in the bar. Bar staff very friendly and good service. However, once in Spring we waited a very long time (over hour and half) for main meal. Not once did staff approach us to apologize or explain the long wait. We saw many other tables who had arrived after us being served (especially as we were hotel guests!). When we asked about when the meals might arrive we received terse response (with the exception of one waiter who was friendly). We ended up waiting over 2 hours. We were offered complimentary dessert but it was very hurriedly prepared. We understand things can happen in the kitchen to delay service but the lack of communication or recognition of us was most disappointing.

We enjoyed our stay at Doubletree by Hilton - the room was spacious & well equipped, & being in the city centre it was central to everything. We dropped our bags on arrival & they were delivered to our room while we returned our hire car. We had two very minor issues with our room - there were areas that hadn't been cleaned properly (kids fingerprints on mirrors & coffee stains near coffee area) & a window which didn't close correctly & allowed the city/street noise in overnight (especially as we were in first floor room) - but being as we are from the 'quiet' country, the city noise would have kept us awake even if the window did close probably! The staff were excellent & very attentive to our needs both on arrival & departure, & during the false fire alarm evacuation. We would definitely stay there again next time we're in Wellington.

Nearly perfect
the hotel is in a great location and exceptionally nice. i would probably rate it as the best hotel i have stayed at in Wellington. the hotel reception staff are first class but if i had one critical thing to comment on , it would involve the bar staff. the hotel has a happy hour 4-6pm but you would not know. we went in the bar and asked for a drinks menu at 4.30pm . the bartender never once mentioned a happy hour . what is the point of having a happy hour if the staff do not let you know . it is only a few dollars but it is annoying . the bartender was more interested in three girl staff members . but for this i would have scored the hotel 10/10. i now just ask every bartender if they have a happy hour on before I.order drinks . a small thing i know but it annoyed me . a staff training issue easily fixed

Fine ... But
This hotel was pleasant to stay in but two things really niggled us. On our travels through Europe and Asia and also most of New Zealand, we have been provided with free wi-fi either in the whole hotel or at least in public areas. At the Hilton, despite paying top dollar, we were charged $10 per day for wi-fi. Come on! Wi fi is no longer a luxury but a common requirement and should be provided free of charge. Also the parking was the dearest we have ever paid at $45 per day. On the basis of these two complaints, we would not choose this hotel again - after all there is plenty to choose from. This relatively new hotel to Wellington should do their research and check out what is being included in the other hotels' tariffs.!
