Save your money. Go elsewhere... you're welcome.
Firstly, the staff is quite rude. We dealt with 4 different people at the front desk; 1 out of 4 were polite. The other 3 were extremely rude, condescending and generally didn't care to make guests feel welcome after you've paid. Our first room was in the hallway right off the lobby. Despite it being a no-smoking property, the hallway leading to the room reeks of cigarettes and marijuana. Upon entering the room, it smelled like musty e- cigarettes or incense. The room looked nothing like the picture on There were holes in the walls from doorknobs, stains on the wallpaper, wallpaper peeling, no soap, no iron, missing towels. The decor was quite outdated and shabby. Best part... the bedbugs! We made it a point to complain at the front desk. The receptionist agreed to switch our rooms after 10 min of us complaining and us having to justify why our room was unacceptable to sleep in overnight. Our second room was located across the lobby in the other building. The hallway still smelled musty but AT LEAST the room looked like the picture on the website i.e. clean. If you find yourself having to sleep at this terrible motel, make sure you ask for a room on the renovated side. Again, the cleaning staff were rude the next morning except for one woman who understood we had late checkout (who hires and trains everyone?!). Avoid this place at all costs; you're better off elsewhere if you want a decent stay. The only good thing about Hotel Newstar: Cafe Milano next door :)

Very good 8.0
I have a disability and getting to and from the room was a challenge. To get to your room about a 3-4 inch step at the door that was locked leading down the hall to the rooms, then at the door of the room. Also there was no ramp at the entrance to the hotel. By the looks of the main part of the hotel it was renovated not long ago so I don’t understand why a ramp was not made. To enter the hotel I had to go down to the second door to use the ramp. This door was also the door that was beside the door leading to the rooms. They are in the process of renovating the rest of the hotel and I hope it will be more accessible. For me this is the ideal location for me. My aunt and a very good friend is not far in a nursing home on Belanger St. just after Lacordaire and before L’Assomption. Also for shopping at Walmart and Galeries D’Anjou shopping centre. I would really like to stay here in the future. And also the price was very good. Most of all I was travelling with a friend and she was english and most of the staff and the employees at the restaurant didn’t speak English and I had to translate. In this business you need to be bilingual to succeed when most of clientele visiting is English. Most of all the rooms were not quiet you could here other people talking or yelling and the doors would slam. This really needs improvement.

The staff was very kind and courteous at check in. The room itself was clean, but there was a dampness that would not leave, and stayed on the sheets (making it uncomfortable to sleep on). The sheets were clean but of poor quality. They didn't breath every well, so during the night you were either hot and had to kick them off, or cold and pull them back on. The worse part though was the fact that there were no fitted sheets. It was a big flat sheet covering the mattress, which would have been ok if it had covered at least the entire mattress. However it did not, and our feet were touching the mattress, which bothered us, so we slept perpendicularly on our King bed to stay on the sheets. The duvet was also not in a real cover, but sandwiched between 2 flat sheets, therefore it moved around too easily. It was also very noisy during the night. We woke up several times from neighboring guests making noise, and the rooms were not very sound proof. Overall it was a poor experience (expedia says it's a 2.5 stars, NOT TRUE, the sign at the hotel lobby says it's a 1 star), however we only stayed one night to crash after a wedding, and it was the cheapest thing we could find, so we figured it was on us to have not paid more for a better hotel. For 1 night it was passable as the rest of the room was clean, but couldn't imagine sleeping there for a few days or something. Would definitely not return.

Below average, bad location.
Of course I knew that the location was a bit out-of-the-way before I got there, and I don't mind walking. However, I didn't realize that the surrounding area was so sketchy. While I don't think there's any real danger, if it's late at night, most people probably wouldn't feel comfortable walking from the subway to the hotel; it's better if you take a cab/uber. However, all of those cabs add up, so in the end, it probably would have been cheaper to stay at a slightly more expensive hotel in a more convenient location. One thing that surprised me is that they don't do housekeeping every day. The morning after the first night, housekeeping came by, but I was about to get in the shower, so I told them to come back later. When I left the room, I put the please-do-housekeeping sign on the door. When I came back over 6-hours later, the room still wasn't done. I asked the person at the desk and she told me that they only do free cleaning for people who are staying for a month or more, but since I was only staying for a few nights, they didn't do that. If I wanted to get it cleaned, I would have to pay $25 and book it a day in advance. However, the next day, they *did* do housekeeping, so I'm not sure what to make of it. Overall, it's definitely a bit below average, but it's not terrible. If 3/5 is a typical hotel right in the middle, then 2/5 seems like the perfect rating for this place.

Filthy, dirty, bad neighborhood, wifi doesn't work
I checked in late at night. Around 1am, bathroom was filthy, pubic hair in tub, hair on bathroom floor. Dust on floor in room. Complained on next morning. I was told they would send a housekeeper. Next night we came back around 3am. Same thing, even more hair in bathroom. Kept leaving 3 towels for 4 people. Complained again. Finally third night when we came back it was clean. Wifi wasn't working, kept disconnecting all the time. Last day I was in lobby and it still wouldn't work. Said something to the girl at front desk. She was telling me how when too many people using it makes it slow, and that I could cone to use it in the lobby. I told her I had little kids and would not leave them alone, and that if they state they have free wifi then they have to make sure they provide it. Coffee machine in lobby made coffee like tea. Had to ask for refund. There is something like a "casino" in the "hotel" that has a porch outside, and there were people drinking outside every night. People hanging around the front door smoking. I'm trying to get in with my babies, they are laughing. Also some drunk/drugged people behind cafe Milano on the back side of the hotel. Rooms need an upgrade. Very disappointed!
