Quality B & B
The owner emailed me confirming my booking and was attentive to subsequent emails between us. Excellent friendly gentleman kindly acted as receptionist on my arrival. The room was 100% ok. Very good for a B & B. Many hotels that I stay at are not so good. Tea, coffee, etc. are available on demand from the second floor. Television - modern flat screen. Crisp white bed linen. An absolutely CLEAN bedroom carpet ... very rare now-a-days! Oxford is incredibly busy but this residence is out of the immediate hustle and bustle. Twenty minutes simple flat walk to the town centre. There is a bus stop almost immediately opposite. really cannot fault this place. I ate a breakfast in the downstairs Silvie bakery cafe that is non-intrusive to the building. There is a small garden at the back and a conservatory for eating meals and snacks. The same gentleman served the breakfast with aplomb. He also recommend a cheap, efficient and punctual taxi service, being 01865 777333. His recommendation to order my taxi the evening before leaving rather than in the morning was excellent advice. All in all a very pleasant but brief stay as I only attended Oxford for an evening piano recital. Thoroughly recommended.

Let down :(
Was really excited to stay at Browns as heard wonderful things. Booked a single room with shared bathroom. I’d never usually do that but I wanted the experience & I’d heard from a work colleague that it was fine. You get slippers & a gown which is a nice touch. The good points: Cute room with electric heater (would have been cold without it). Breakfast in the cafe (extra price) was nice. Bad points: Check in isn’t clear. There’s a blackboard outside on the SIDE of the wall telling you how to check in but I didn’t see that until when I was leaving! You check in with the cafe staff - which was weird. No information given just handed a key... One of my towels wasn’t clean & covered in makeup The throw on the bed was dirty I went out for a run in the morning came back housekeeping had been (no problem) and left the bedroom door pinned open... my work laptop, 2 iPhones & all my belongings clearly on display on the desk right in front of the door. I waited 5 mins & they never showed - I stayed in room 1 so every single other guest would have been able to walk past & see that!? So unimpressed. The shower in shared bathroom didn’t drain so there were other people’s hairs lying around. Overall it could have been great, but all these little things made it unpleasant & I wouldn’t stay again or recommend :( which is sad.

Cozy, clean, inexpensive--far from main sites
If one needs to stay in Oxford inexpensively and somewhere clean and cozy--this is the spot. However, in my room, the bathroom (while fine for a small woman like myself) would've been far too small for a man to navigate. The view and light from my room was spectacular and the staff (what I saw of them) were very accommodating, but the distance from the main attraction without initial knowledge of the bus system was problematic (very far from the rail). Coming from Canada, I did not have access to roaming, so I did not have maps, I walked a very long distance to find this spot. If one has access to the internet or money for a cab, this place would be quite good. The staff carried my suitcase up the stairs, but maneuvering down the narrow staircase was a bit fraught.

Not the best
Having a café downstairs was nice but it was too expensive for us to use much. I think hotel owners should be forced to stay in each of their rooms on a regular basis. The bed wasn't very comfortable and the lack of headboard means that the wall will soon get dirty. Being expected to vacate the room in the daytime is not good for us as my wife has M E and sometimes needs to rest all day. We were on the 2nd floor. The most worrying thing was that the fire door at the top of the stairs was habitually wedged open. I shut it frequently but I would then find it wedged open again. If I'd stayed longer I would have stolen the wedge. This is dangerous! The coffee was nice.

Spot On
Browns is an interesting place. On the ground floor there is a busy cafe, with a very nice rear garden space. Upstairs are the hotel rooms. They are compact and perfect and clean, like little cabins. OK, so mine didn't have an en suite, and the tea-making facilities were in the hallway. But so what? It only cost me about 50 quid a night. The bathroom was just a few feet away, and the cafe downstairs would leave a big plate of unsold cakes, brownies etc by the tea-making facilities at the end of the day, which was very nice. You can open the windows, hang out in the rear garden, borrow a book - it's all good. I'd definitely stay again.
