Looks nice, horrible front desk staff towards fore
Couldn't even stay here. Front desk was incredible how they were treating the dozen or so people trying to get a room when check-in started. They had some computer issue, or too many down rooms, so they said all our reservations were invalid. I peeked at this screen system, it seemed they had at least three "better" rooms available, but said they were not or they could not allow. We have video of this one guy finally exploding after the staff tried to ignore everyone until they just left. People prepaid for these rooms and some came from different countries. This place as a dozen country flags outfront yet was the most unfriendly place we have encountered in all sorry Americas how they treat Spanish speaking and non Spanish speaking foreigners. They insisted we did not prepay, even after showing credit card statement. We were forced to leave and stay with local couch surfer. We contacted and still no action or refund. We never stayed, we never signed or filled legal foreign guest documents, we are not in their security footage. Disgraceful

Cheap for a Reason
This was the mustiest place I’ve ever stayed. The hallways smelled like a high school locker room and the room smelled of mildew and had visible black mold. The bedding was stained and the air conditioner blew nothing but hot air. Spend a little more and stay at a nicer place.

Worst-run hotel ever
There are so many problems with this place I almost don't know where to begin. But at the outset I want to say that the location is great, and that the hotel has potential even though it's not being maintained well. If you don't care about service or security, it's a comfortable enough place at a cheap price. But the staff is terribly incompetent and no one takes responsibility for the many errors committed daily. My stay was for 17 days, and on at least 5 of them they didn't bother to clean my room. Innumerable requests went completely unheeded, and there is no real security in the rooms because there is no chain on the doors, nor any other way to keep staff from entering. The worst offense came after 10:00 one night, as I was lying in bed: a couple came into my room because the "system" somehow listed my room as unoccupied, and the staff had given them the same room. Perhaps not surprisingly, there were multiple occasions when guests would be found screaming at the front desk staff at the top of their voices; they, too, were having problems of one kind or another, and no one was responding. There were also lots of little things. For example, my key wouldn't work, and I'd have to make trip after trip to the front desk to have it remade. The breakfast room opened late almost every day, and one day there was no milk. To make matters worse, the staff rarely apologized, and things never got any better. I'll be back in Montevideo next year, but I won't stay at the Balmoral again.

Everything was perfect apart from the metal piece sticking out our mattress which caught on our legs. Reception didn’t seem to care..

I PAID $32.00 a night in March 2019. well worth the price. Small room but good breakfast and good location.

Avoid it
The room is very small. Bed is soft and noisy. There is a big difference with the pictures on the website. The guy at the front desk is actually very friendly. However, I would avoid this hotel.

Stay in the Old Town
We were there 3 nights and, somehow, the second day they missed our room (no housekeeping). There is no bar or restaurant at night. On the other hand, in the back street (opposite to Plaza Cagancha) at walking distance there are plenty of restaurants, parrillas, confiteries (european bakeries focussed on pastry....a must for sweets and coffee). TV was poor and internet slow in the room. Very good location in the Old Town for day activities, safe and walking distance to city land marks. We didn't feel too confortable for walking at night, nothing happened but, just a feeling.

Good 6.0
Serviceable, but not 4-star worthy
Stayed for two nights in one of the single bedrooms on the 4th floor, which I chose for the price (less than $75 USD in total). There were some highlights, for example the very friendly front desk staff and the walkable location. But overall, the stay was not entirely pleasant. The room was very dated and upon close inspection, dirty. Not up to the standards of a 4-star hotel. Spiders at the junction where the ceiling joins the wall in the bathroom, stains on the towels, black mildew on the walls, completely broken wooden luggage rack, spotty wifi, light bulbs that flickered and turned off on their own, a large stain on the wall by the head of the bed, air conditioner cords blocking the view out the window, hairs and a musty smell in the bedding, egg shells in the scrambled eggs at breakfast, running out pf cups, plates, coffee, and food at the buffet. Overall I'd call the hotel "serviceable" but definitely dated and not matching my expectations for 4-stars. The breakfast staff could use customer service skills training (though the front desk staff were, as mentioned, good.) The room I stayed in needs a coat of paint and a refurbishment. Stay here if you're budget conscious only.
