Room to improve
Small window facing wall of another building, noisy exhaust fan in bathroom, room light was very dark and working desk too tiny. Taxis very hard to get as its in an inconvieniant location, also room doors are very thin so you get constantly disturbed by people passing by outside.

Reasonable deal in unassuming location
Area is upcoming, if a little off the beaten track. Hotel is new, room comfortable if small.

Clean and new hotel
The hotel is clean and new. Staff are helpful, breakfast quite nice. But is a little far from the shopping area.

A little gem, though off the beaten track
Last year I stayed at the Howard Johnson on my trip to Shanghai - bold, brash, in your face (some of the Hawkers, literally) and slap bank in the melee of town. This year I vowed to try somewhere quieter, and I will certainly return to the Campanile. Quite a hip, happening French chain it is, literally (if you can ever be in Shanghai) in the middle of nowhere. It doesn't feel unsafe, but it is dark and quiet outside, and it is only a 5-minute walk (as long as you walk the right way and don't have a heavy case) from the new 13 line stop at the Shanghai History museum. My room on the 8th floor looks on to the traffic converging onto People's Park, a brisk 25-minute walk away (45 if you stop off at Yang's fried dumplings en route), but I don't miss the hustle at all. The room is clean, functional, unworn, quiet and warm. Service is good. Reception staff helpful. Bar adequate but don't expect to eat restaurant food here as there is none. Don't expect to wander outside to find a restaurant close by either as you will be in for a long walk (but a quiet one). There is a great deal of development close by, and many of the older, cramped residents' houses are being demolished (along with, I guess, a lot of the social history as well). And perhaps that will mean the rest of corporate Shanghai will slowly swallow the more off beat places such as this. But for now, I will certainly return. Bring your walking shoes (and maybe a torch) and you are in for a bit of a treat.
