Very good hotel close to the centre of Vienna
I chose this hotel as it was in an old historic part of the inner city area close to all the main Vienna attractions and I was not disappointed. It is a boutique hotel modern, well appointed in a small and quiet little cobbled square with a few pubs and restaurants just yards away. Staff were very friendly and helpful speaking good English. One of the the Vienna sightseeing buses (Big Yellow buses) stops just yards from the hotel as well as the airport transfer bus which runs every 30 minutes. The main Vienna Mitt rail station is a short 15 minute walk away. There are many bars restaurants, shops, parks, museums, palaces, churches all within walking distance such as the beautiful St Stephens Cathedral and square is where everything seems to start from - is a few minutes away. Once I got to know the broad area I found I could walk to many of the attractions in the centre such as The Vienna Opera House, the many museums, parks and palaces. I noticed that there is a vibrant shopping centre catering for all tastes. The Vienna transport system seems first class with an extensive tram and rail network. I was impressed that the pedestrian has the right of way and NOT the car unlike other countries. The city feels quite safe to walk about at all hours and the police are always visible. I also only saw a few beggars in the main city area. In summary it is a beautiful city that cannot be seen in only 3 days. There is so much more to explore.

Great location, receptionists not very polite
All in all it was a pleasant stay with a few hiccups. We were given a room which was exactly by the elevator and it was *very* noisy. So noisy that we noticed that immediately after the check in. We asked to change rooms, but unfortunately the other available double room was exactly the same, from the other side of the elevator, so we ended up having a twin room instead. Not ideal for couples of course. We asked the receptionist if she can make a note to look if she can put us in a double room the next day if any is free and instead of making a note and trying to accommodate us, she asked us to remind her the next day. I would expect that your staff for your rates would be able to do that without reminders. We never did remind her, couldn't be bothered. The same morning, after having a quick shower, we realized the shower was blocked. Before we left for the afternoon, we told the receptionist about that, she said she would check it. When we got back she said I checked it, nothing is wrong with it. We had to show her a photo of the blocked shower to (completely unwillingly) agree to call someone to unblock it. The handyman came very promptly and fixed the issue very quickly. After that (he stepped in the shower with his shoes) he said he'll send someone to clean up and bring fresh towels. The same receptionist came to bring the towels but she didn't try to clean. When i asked her to, she said "OK. I will do it" with a very bad attitude. Not very professional unfortunately.

Ideal location for visiting the Centre of Vienna
The hotel was located a short walk away from the CAT station which we got from the airport. Upon arrival it was very clean and the location was great. We did ask to move due to being in a room right outside the lift, this did make us feel a little nuisance when asking by the approach we received. The bed was super comfy and the comfort of the room was nice. We have stayed in many Pullman/Accor hotels and this one seemed to lack amenities such as cotton buds, shower caps etc. The latter would have been good as it had a rain shower, I got unexpectedly wet after turning the tap the wrong way!! The bathroom was nice and layout good. Not much storage space but ok for staying for a long weekend. The restaurant in the hotel is closed on Sunday and Monday evening, there isn't many peoples to eat so we did find this strange. The location was perfect for visiting the Christmas Markets, within walking distance to the main centre and train/tram lines. Within walking distance is The Street Food Restaurant/Joint/Hangout and Hard Rock Cafe - definitely recommend visiting both - best two places we found to eat by far!

Great location, breakfast, comfort
We would definitely stay here on our next trip to Vienna. The location, in the midst of the old Jewish Quarter, was convenient and is surrounded by restaurants and bars, which was great. Surprisingly, the hotel itself is very quiet -- best of both worlds! Breakfast is fantastic and the breakfast staff are extremely accommodating and helpful. Bar is limited, but stays open till midnight. Our only complaint was that the hotel did not have the room we booked on arrival, and because we had prepaid through Expedia, there was no way to refund the difference in value. The reception clerk when we arrived was not empowered to upgrade our room beyond what was originally booked, so we had to settle for a smaller room with fewer amenities. Next day, the hotel contacted Expedia, but there was no way to make it right, so they tried to make it up to us with free drinks and minibar snacks. We appreciated the accommodation -- were it not for that, we would not return.

Excellent location
In so many ways the Mercure Vienna First hotel is an excellent place to stay. It is located in quiet pedestrianised part of the city that allows guests to stroll to the key sites of Vienna, St Stephan's Cathedral, Imperial Vienna, the river Danube, the wealth of museums and heritage sites. The staff in the hotel are very obliging and knowledgable about travel and facilities in the city and beyond. We were assisted ably by staff to replace a lost travel document. The facilities are good and the breakfast arrangement provide a good range of food which includes freshly prepared egg dishes at guest request without additional charge. The hotel merits its four stars except, strangely, there was no wardrobe in the room which meant I lived out of a suitcase for the week we were there. Other room facilities were well up to standard.
