My Mother and I recently made a booking through the website Wotif to stay in a 2 bedroom Apartment in the St Paul’s Apartment Complex. The booking was made on 28 April. The night accommodation for 6 May 2019. The reservation email did not mention works on the complex. The itinerary that you click through to does not mention works on the complex A further email was received on the 29 April 2019. I looked at the email and noted the lock box number highlighted in yellow. In small print at the bottom of the email it notes that the Mulgrave Building has work going on. I did not see the small print. We arrived after 5.30pm so had to use the lock box and did not try to locate a reception area. We then made our way to the room. The room was very dated and even from the state of the front door (water damage) we were thinking this is not great. However we were tired and thought – we can cope with this – let’s just have dinner and get to bed. We pulled the curtains – and thought gosh there looks like there is scaffolding everywhere. We were woken at at 7.25am with a drill and banging so loud - that it might as well have been in the room with us. We had no choice but get up and leave our room - we had left by 8.30am - the noise was so horrendous. We could see a builder walk past our window. There was not one window we could see out. It was all shrouded in cloth. The deck was not a deck but was scaffolding with left over lunch paper.

Very Handy, easy motorway access
A late check, in the accommodation was just off the motorway so no driving around Wellington on Friday night. We were able to park on the street as we had been advised so that was fine just across the road. Leaving and getting back on the motorway was just as easy, we had about a 5-minute walk to the stadium and in the opposite direction to a well-stocked supermarket. As the reception was not open till after 10 am we did hang around waiting as there was no answer on the after-hours phone. I would have been a bit miffed if the matter had required urgent attention. I enquired about the renovations but it wasn't them that was the disruption, rather the new building site next door which started work at 7.30am on Saturday morning-I appreciate that you can do nothing about it but it would have been nice to have been advised. All in all a good stay would be happy to return only disappointment was were told 2 single beds in the second room, in fact, there was a roll away in an annex off the main bedroom. I am more concerned the bed was a roll away and I was told it was a bed after specifically asking about it.

Wonderful value for money!
What met us when we opened the door to the apartment was totally unexpected. It was large, with a full kitchen, and with everything provided including a washing machine/dryer, full Sky TV, and even daily servicing. A heater that was not working properly was promptly replaced. Currently there is some scaffolding around the building and major updates and maintenance is taking place but this in no way affected us. St Paul's is a great place to stay, and with the upgrades planned will be even better. Emily and Amanda at reception were friendly and helpful, and used their initiative. The location is close to a large supermarket, restaurants, takeaways and with a short walk to the central city. Very convenient to Archives NZ and other government agencies. After 3 nights we traveled out of Wellington to a heritage hotel at almost twice the price, but which was not at all enjoyable. We will certainly return. This is certainly a case where you can't "read a book by its cover", especially with renovations on right now. It is just a great comfortable, easy place to stay and highly recommended. If I had a relevant business, I would grab Amanda for it tomorrow!

Pros and cons
When we first arrived the room smelt like someone had just used the toilet, we bought air fresheners which helped but the smell came and went throughout the duration of our stay. The roll out bed wasn't in the room but after a phone call it was delivered promptly even though it was a Sunday and the staff were very apologetic. The roll out bed was like a camp bed and we ended up putting the matteress on the floor as it was more comfortable. The queen bed was very comfortable. The room was nice and warm and we were always surprised to find hoe cold and bad the weather was when we went outdoors. The ranch slider didn't lock but it didn't lead anywhere to pose a risk of a break in.

Our room was a split level, which we didn't know. The steps up to the bedroom were unsuitable for our aged parents. We tried phoning and eventually the owner wax located, we explained the situation and he found another room for our parents at no extra cost. It's great when someone can do this for you. Most of the apartments outside/windows are being renovated to earthquake standards and bubble wrapped ( well that's what it feels like not being able to see outside). The room my parents had was having double glazed windows being put in but the room was lovely, clean and up to date. Our room hadn't been renovated fully but will be nice once it was finished if you didn't mind the spiral steps. It was near food sources and only 5 mins from the railway station, which suited us as we had an early start to go on the Northerner to Auckland. Would stay here again.
