The hotel metropol is conveniently close to that Gare de Nord (Eurostar) but that is where the positive comments end. The hotel is rundown, basic and in need of a major facelift. The reception area is just about acceptable and the staff we met were all fairly friendly. The stairs are dark, dingy, steep and very much in need of new carpets and a lighting upgrade. The lift is not for the claustrophobic but it is reliable. The room we stayed in was old fashioned, underwhelming and painted orange and black!! However, it was kept very clean and the beds were comfortable. The weather was very hot during our visit to Paris and our room didn’t have air conditioning, although it didn’t make a lot of difference to our nights sleep as we were all so exhausted from our days sightseeing that we slept fairly well. Having said that, we had to open windows for comfort and ventilation and found ourselves were woken occasionally by other residents talking in the early hours which echoed into our room as did cigarette smoke.
We didn’t sample breakfast as the breakfast room was unappealing. We decided to use the local Boulanger located 3 minutes down the road. The room had no tea or coffee making facilities.
Check out was very easy and the hotel allowed us to store our luggage after checkout which we appreciated.
Overall, the hotel Metropol could be so much better if money was spent on modernising it. Decor, lighting, carpets, plug sockets, usb points, breakfast facilities, air conditioning.
