Not as advertised!
Room looked nothing like the superior studio pictures on file for the hotel; we got a very cramped room with a tiny bed, definitely not queen size. Dishwasher and washing machine were both defective, and despite repeated notifications to the hotel staff during our 8-day stay, nothing was done about fixing them. Sliding door lock was extremely temperamental, and the buttons in the elevators didn't work properly, requiring several attempts to pick a floor. (It makes you wonder what else about the elevators hasn't been serviced!) We got only one room key when we checked in, and were then shocked when the hotel reported that our hotel key had been found by the James Cook hotel, opposite. This turned out to be a second key we were completely unaware of, and it wouldn't have been a big effort for someone to blag their way in to the building (or simply tailgate someone else) and rob us, with no sign of forced entry! Security appraisal: 0 out of 10. Internet service also spontaneously disconnects, despite a strong WiFi signal. You should also note that rooms are not made up on public holidays (but you will still pay the full service charge.) We would not consider staying here again, and would suggest to hotel management that considerable renovations be carried out, and security training provided to staff.

ok, but some gremlins
We like Quest apartments, and look for them as a place to stay. We found this one sits at the low end of the Quest standard... a few small things took the shine off. On the positive side, it was reasonable value for money, and the location was better than expected. Access to Lambton quay was just a few minutes away, and an easy walk to the water front...more direct than Google maps was telling us. And that counts for a lot. Great security ... typical of all Quest appartments Things that took the shine off: Room faces central atrium area that is closed in. The mild odour that is apparent when you step out of the lift into the atrium, and that permeates into the room. Nothing strong, just a need to get a little more fresh air into the atrium area to let the old cooking smells go. The atrium is an echo-chamber, so we did hear the 3am rugby commentary from another room a couple of floors up. They're aware of this and have strict rules to keep the noise down, so not a big issue. It was warm and no heat pump, so we wanted to open the window, but had the noise to contend with. The room size was also on small side... bed and walking room around it. This is ok, but not consistent with our experience of other Quest. None of these things were enough to put us using quest which still rates highly with us, but flag for the building management to take into account for their next building refurb.

Good 6.0
Good location with car parking available.
Good location for Lambton Quay for the newer bigger shops, in the walking distance is shopping via steep steps, cut through if shops are open otherwise a long walk around, Cuba Street is about 10-15 minutes walk, a couple of smaller supermarkets within 5-10 minutes walk via the steep steps, car park ($20 per day extra) but hard to find, access is tight and tight to drive around. The hotel is quite smelly due to the drain system (I think anyway) bed is really, really soft, well equiped kitchenette, (does have a two ring hob), great full sky tv & picture quality, a little dirty, shower is very small cubicle, (shower was a little mouldy) great to have the washing machine/drier in one but takes 3 hours tops and that is for a half load, 1 sachet of low sud liquid wash is available but you can not use any other as you may get charged for damage to the machine if you use other washing products, there is NO room servicing/clean towels on a Sundays (nothing is said about this in the info) there is a gym and a swimming pool but we did not go to this as we did not know but in the info it does say that's the pool is only open a limited time and can be closed to guests as it may be being used for private lessons etc.. as it has an internal area which some rooms are over looking it can be noisy if you have your windows open (there is a notice to say to closed your windows and doors etc for noise) the room was warm as it does have its own water cylinder. The staff were friendly.

Good 6.0
Great location. As far as Quest accommodation goes, this was not good...or maybe its just a NZ thing. The bathrooms were small but at least there was a stand in shower. Unfortunately there is either the back view (facing the motorway) or the front (facing street). We happened to be there when it was 25 degs (quite warm by NZ standards) - with the setting sun, it was hot (even by Aussie standards). Just one fan. Yikes! Lasting impression...lady on check out was just "overpowering" the guy. I just needed my change - instead she was telling the guy to take my $2 coin and give me $2 worth of coins so I could then pay my $1.14 in phone hang on. Why did she then take $1.20 from me in the end. Sadly I wasnt going to waste another minute.

Very good 8.0
Very nice room .... until you open the window
On arrival, the staff were excellent, the room was lovely and more than enough space for two people (studio apartment). The bathroom was slightly small but fine for one person at a time, the kitchen was nice, well equipped, the room was very clean and the location amazing! Short walk through the James Cook hotel and elevators right down to Lambton Quay. The only problem was that there is literally no fresh air into the room. We found it quite stuffy as it was a warm week but the balcony door and window opened into the enclosed atrium and this provided no airflow at all. There is also a not so pleasant cooking odour from the extractor fans (which to be fair, you got used to quite quickly). There was a freestanding fan provided which provided a small amount of comfort. I would probably stay here again but choose a 1 bedroom apartment which opens onto the street.
