Good
Great place for divers, and the dive company with valet service is great, but snorkelers beware, there is NO house reef and no swimming from your beautiful villas. The ocean is less than 2 ft deep for forever, filled with grass, bits of fire coral and the occasional scorpionfish (reef shoes people!!). You can swim off of the palapa, but there is nothing really to "see". you have to get off the resort to get any reef. The week we were there, there was a new kitchen company. The existing staff was great trying to feed people, but for the first half of the stay, there was no alcohol. I mean, not even rum. And you would have to go down at least two menu choices before they would have something they could cook. Communication between the new company and the existing general management was pitiful.

The man at the front desk was so welcoming and flexible with our checkout time. They made us a welcome drink and had a bottle of champagne waiting for us in our room! 10 out of 10 would recommend to anyone looking for an awesome place to stay and take in the beauty of Roatan.

The private beach is beautiful, all you need is located at the hotel. If you want to go snorkeling as a beginner the property has its own area with a sunken Volkswagen. If you are an expert, they have diving tours and equipment, no need to go anywhere else. The staff is amazing also.

Liked that it was nice and quiet. Didn’t like that it didn’t have its own little beach. But overall a nice place to stay.

This is a peaceful, tranquil, out of the way hotel. This was our first time on the island (hopefully not the last) so we didn’t know how everything was situated. We booked the hotel based on the pictures and it being basically on the water. This hotel is mainly for hard core divers, which we were not. They offer full service diving, they even wash your wet suit! Fir that reason, the divers take off in the morning and the hotel is quiet during the day. This was perfect for us as we were happy to frolic freely around the property and take pictures or lay around the pool. Because there’s so few people during the day, the staff get to know you and take good care of you. We left a couple of things on the property and their staff turned them in to the office to return them to us. We felt safe and well cared for. Their restaurant food is very tasty. We took a cab to do some activities around the island and then went back to our tranquil little spot to relax. Their driver, Ken, is very knowledgeable about the island and was more than a cab driver, he was also an excellent guide. We definitely recommend Barefoot Cay!

Lack of air conditioning is a deal breaker
I was concerned that our cottage did not have air-conditioning when I booked the Grand Villa. I was assured that the air conditioning was sufficient and that the upstairs bedroom would be comfortable at night because of the cool breeze. Nothing could be further from the truth. The whole house (which was laid out beautifully) stayed hot and humid all day and all night. The master bedroom had a wall unit but it didn’t decrease the temperature or humidity. Our bedding and especially the pillows smelled like mildew and the beddding was always damp when it was time for bed. The upstairs bedroom was stifling hot and our kids ended up staying with friends at another resort because they weren’t able to sleep in the sweltering heat. We couldn’t really use the house like we planned because it was so hot and humid all the time. All our food would get soggy unless we kept it in the refrigerator. The television would not keep a signal and the power and WiFi kept going out. We couldn’t use our beach because the sand fleas were so bad and we even avoided sitting outside at the pool because of the “no-see-ums” ate us up. Given the chance, I would stay in West Bay at the more populated resorts. Most of the sights and restaurants are on that side of the island and we wouldn’t have to pay $50 in cab fare for the round trip from Barefoot to West Bay/West End. All in all, I thought the service was top notch but the accommodations came up short.

Average place, not for families, photos misleading
This is an ok 3 star resort if you are there to the onsite diving. It’s not a 4 star luxury resort as advertised though and the photos are very misleading. The place as a whole needs some TLC, the beach is non-existant (although the ocean view is good), it is secluded and the onsite restaurant is below average and overpriced by around 60% (eg a single burger on stale bun, no sides $18. Steak $40, etc). There are far better options around. Grand Caribbean Resort is one. I would also note as an observation that the reviews tend to be a 10 for on-island local reviews and a 5-6 for those guests who are not from the island. Something can’t be right there.
