2/10 Poor

Very dilapidated. Frequent water and power shortcuts. No gym or spa as advertised in Expedia or in hotel website. Too expensive for the extremely poor condition of the hotel. Windows do not close property.

Staff were extremely helpful when my partner was ill which really saved our visit. Referred me to an excellent guide so some sightseeing could still be done. Convenient location to explore but of course can make some of the rooms a little noisy.

2/10 Poor

Avoid at all costs. This was obviously a once beautiful hotel but it has fallen into an appalling state, and they are still charging llike a high end hotel The lobby is acceptable and the staff reasonably welcoming but when I requested a soft drink at a quarter to ten I was told the bar was closed: it was still manned, and the staff were sitting around idly chatting. I was advised to try the minibar in my room but the drinks were warm and there was no bottle opener. I selected it because of the pool and the location: the location is perfect but the pool is, as another reviewer said, an empty concrete pit. The power cut out overnight, but that's quite common for Ethiopia. When I went for breakfast I was told there was no coffee due to the power cut but when I questioned this a cup of fresh Ethiopian coffee appeared within minutes. The room was extremely shabby, in contrast with the lobby, and although it had been cleaned tolerably the walls and curtains were filthy. The sheets were washed but stained. In the bathroom I found living and dead cockroaches. I can't comment on the shower because I could bear only the most cursory rinse after seeing cockroaches scuttle for the drains when I turned on the light.

View of the castle
We had an very nice stay. The staff was very friendly and efficient. Our room had a huge terrace, which we didn't expect, and a view of the castle. The wifi didn't reach to our room, but otherwise it was a great stay.

8/10 Very good

Comfortable room, great view over Gonder. Staff were helpful. Buffet breakfast was tasty and plentiful but be aware it’s Ethiopian food.

2/10 Poor

Overpriced & honestly a rip off for tourists
This hotel room was extremely expensive at 74 euros and not up to any condition that 74 euros should get in Ethiopia. I was new to Ethiopia and did not know i was overpaying by so much for such a place. The serving staff I have no complaints with, but I discovered upon check out that local Ethiopian residents pay approximately 1/5th of what i paid as a foreigner. I observed the bookin computer at the check in and a single room will cost a local approximately 450 birr (15 euros) or 600 birr for a double. I confronted the reception staff regarding this and asked could i have a better rate/ these rates if i ever checked in again and they politely said no (a little infuriating, I understand locals pay less sometimes but this is ridiculous!). The restaurant was good by Ethiopian standards, try the fried fish! Wifi was so so when it worked - and not from my room. There are much better options in Gondar and closer to the fort.

Centrally Located
Pros: + Centrally located to Gondar's castles + Stress free check-in + SAT-TV + Helpful & friendly staff + Airport pickup & dropoff + Hot showers - low pressure Cons: - Breakfast buffet - poor selection of breakfast foods / weak coffee - Poor value for the money spent on room - Restaurant menu - kitchen lacked ingredients to make most menu items.

6/10 Good

The hotel has a great location, almost right next to the Fasil Ghebbi castle complex and a block off the Piazza. But it's not particularly friendly, and not all of the staff seem to be trained in hospitality. The power was out every night from about 9:30 pm to 6:30 am, the rooms get really hot at night, the food is mediocre at best (even the basics were unavailable at times, and the breakfast buffet was inedible). It felt pretty empty at low season, but that didn't inspire better service or greater efficiency. Having the power go out every night was just weird, especially because none of the staff ever mentioned it. Bring a flashlight if you want to get up before 6:30 am, or if you want to find your way around the place after 9-ish.
