Poor 2.0
Rude, uncomfortable, dirty and dingy
We arrived and had to go down to the basement to our room which smelled like damp and was quite unpleasant. It was a hot sunny day but we had to use the lights as it was that dark. The bed seemed really rather small, so I asked the owner if it was definitely a double and his response was extremely rude and his words were ‘I’m going to have to walk away because you are annoying me’. I was very offended and upset by this comment so I asked him not to be so rude to a customer and he continued to be very sarcastic and unpleasant. I walked back to our room feeling very uncomfortable so I contacted to ask what we should do. They contacted the man and he refused to give us a refund so we had no choice but to stay there. After the phone call he came down to our room and asked if we wanted a tape measure to measure the bed which I thought was very rude and unprofessional and he then said I’d called him a liar. Overall I was astounded with the service we received and wouldn’t recommended it to anybody. The room itself was smelly, dark and the sheets were also dirty with stains on a few of them. We didn’t have breakfast because we felt so uncomfortable so I can’t comment on that. I was very glad to leave after our two nights there.

Beware of the owner of this poor B&B
I wish I had read the other reviews before staying here. The complaints about the owner who lives on site are spot on. He very rudely complained to me about being too noisy with the outside door, because it slammed on me (the wind caught it)....geesh! He also complained about other customers in front of me. He seems to have no concept of the "customer is always right" idea, nor did he seem to have any appreciation that I forked over $400 for the week stay. The trash can in my room was never emptied the entire week stay. The pillows offer no neck support, and the mattress seems to be 10-20 years old. They made the bed once during my entire week stay. The breakfast is skimpy- cereal and toast only (variety would be nice, or some bacon eggs and/or sausage). The WIFI system is not great, they give you 500 mb increments, if you run out at night, you are out of luck until you can get more in the morning. Not at all recommended. The owner will probably reply to my criticism saying I was a bad guest, just like he does the rest of the bad reviews.

This property is a rustic property and to be honest is a lot nicer than the initial appearance from the street might indicate. The owner is very friendly and welcoming, and is helpful with local information and so on. The room I had was freshly renovated and could accommodate 3 people. Bed was comfortable and bathroom was spacious modern and everything worked well. Personally I would have wished for more of a desk in the room, there was a sort of side table/credenza thing with a stool which I was able to work on but a desk, for me would have been more suitable. I think probably this accommodation would suit couples or families more than a business traveller, as the cost was very low, especially when you think you could get a couple and a child in the room. I also had internet issues on the second night, but why the time it was happening it was too late to annoy the owner about it, so I can't take marks away for this as I never gave the owner the chance to sort it out. Location is good, being a couple of streets back from Cambridge Tce, and within 15 mins walk of Wellington's hot spots like Cuba St or Courtenay Place. Very quiet area compared to most accomodation closer to the CBD. I would say brilliant place for a small family. Breakfast was included but I wasn't able to take advantage of it, with an early meeting and then an airport departure on the second night I stayed. All in all very pleasant and cost-effective place to stay, with good personal service.

In its own niche
A few comments on here about the owner/manager, I can probably see how he could rub people up the wrong way but was on the whole helpful and pleasant to me, made a cup of coffee on arrival, gave some quick tips on the local area etc. Plus I became better informed about the aptitude of people from Adelaide at parking, which was useful. As for the guest house itself, the shower in my room worked fine - could probably do with an extractor fan to reduce the condensation but that's more their problem than yours. There was daily cleaning and a newspaper each day which is a nice touch although not sure how thorough they were given the same dead spider was in its web next to the toilet in my room across the weekend. On the whole, clean enough though. The decor in the hotel is certainly eclectic and somewhat dated but nothing was broken. My room in the basement level seemed to be on a slight slope and the headboard to the bed rattled noisily at the slightest movement. Overall, money has clearly been invested in this place recently and for its price point in the market, it's fine. More investment is going to be needed I suspect which might move a move upmarket and a more...conventional approach to customer service.

Basic but great spot for seeing Wellington
As a cheap crash pad to see Wellington from I don't think I've found anything better, especially if you've got a car. The parking permit is for "Mount Victoria" which means you can park down close to Courtenay Place for free, all day, should you wish. Access out to the highway and back is easy: little/no fighting through town traffic. Compared to a lot of the hotels where the traffic is a nightmare and parking is $20/night or more, I liked this deal. I didn't have a problem finding a fairly close parking spot. If you're walking, Courtenay Place is fairly close, and then it's not that far to Te Papa. It was pretty quiet at night. There was construction going on during the day at this time, which was a little annoying. Wi-fi was good: John provides you with vouchers for the zenbu wireless system. It was useful to have access to fridge/microwave etc in the dining room. The decor is incredibly ugly, but the room was clean, the shower was hot, had good pressure, and the shower head was high enough. Towels/bedding were old and ugly, but clean. Breakfast was basic but adequate: cereal, toast and spreads, juice and instant coffee. Overall: ugly, but a cheap place to stay, with free wifi, parking and breakfast, and a good shower. I'll be back.
