    Characterful coaching inn

Coaching inn with lots of character; my room was in a newer building adjacent to the original but accessed through the older part. Lovely pub and beer garden.

    Not good sound insulation.

Could hear the sound of the television from the adjoining room. Lavatory took a long time to flush.

Check-in time changed the night before our stay

This hotel is reasonably priced and in a good location in the centre of Exeter, but don't expect much else. Walls are very thin, so we could hear the TV in the next room, which woke me up. They emailed us the night before our stay in September 2021 (three months after we'd booked) to say that check-in time had been changed from 2pm to 4pm to "ensure rooms are cleaned following our Enhance cleaning routines over this busy time". No offer of a discount or even an apology for the short notice. Presumably their "enhance cleaning routines" had been in place for a while, so it didn't make sense for them to give us less than 24 hours' notice, which was very inconvenient as we had a day in Exeter planned and wanted a shower after a long journey. I emailed them to ask for a discount but I just received an automated reply saying thanks for your feedback.

    Friendly and cosy stay 😊

Very friendly and cosy, the rooms were clean and comfy. All the staff were helpful and genuinely nice people. A member of staff called Adrian was just about as good as you would ever get to work at pleasing customers. i will be going back for a stay in the future for definite.

    Lovely stay

Initially my first greeting in the hotel reception was a little frosty. I had arrived earlier than the stated check in time of 4pm. I actually arrived about 3.30pm, so not too early. I had rung the previous evening to arrange this as I had to be at an appointment at a set time. The previous evening I had received notification from the hotel via e-mail at 8pm, of the later check in time. So I couldn't make an amendment to my appointment for the next day. I had been driving for 5.5hrs, so was a little weary. It would have been nice to be greeted with a welcome to the hotel and not " Check in time is at 4pm " as a first greeting to a customer. Despite this initial disappointment, I really enjoyed my stay. I have stayed in this hotel many times and the staff have always been excellent. They are really friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make your stay pleasant. I can only think the receptionist that day when I checked in was having an off day. On a positive note it was great to see the hotel has had some recent refurbishment. It was a big improvement. Keep up the good work !

    Overall a great stay

Overall a good stay and value for money, our room was quite warm which meant the fan needed to be on all night else sleep was uncomfortable, there was not enough coffee for a 2 night stay as this was not replenished during our stay. Bed comfy though and facilities offered were good. Loved how the gar was open later than the gate in nearby quayside and we really enjoyed playing the board games.
