A Resort near the City of Kota Kinabulu
The hotel is, in some sites, describes as being 5 star. Maybe it was in the past but today is might be best thought of as a rather worn 4 star. The staff are pleasant and well-meaning but the infrastructure is definitely worn. The swimming pool is great albeit shallow. There are lots of kids and experiences and activities for kids. That is a real plus for family vacations. The beach area is, however, limited – and at times there is an issue with jellyfish. Breakfast is extensive in quantity and extremely busy. They had to have an overflow section several days we were there. The quality is mixed. Little by way of fresh fruits. The egg stations were busy. The restaurants were expensive for what you got. The key feature to look out for whether there is a balcony in your room. The first room had windows that did not open and it smelled of mould or disinfectant or perhaps both. The second room had opening windows because it had a balcony. It made a huge difference. Both the sea view and golf view rooms have good outlooks. We chose the se view but there seem to be few of those rooms with a balcony. In summary, the Pacific Sutera is great for a family vacation if you have kids aged 3 to 12 but be prepared to pay a lot for food and/or for travel by taxi to food outlets in Kota Kinabulu.

Solid resort hotel.
I stayed here for 3 nights for business while in KK. Usually I stay in Le Merididan or another business hotel. on the positive - it has a great gym, pool and small private beach. Staff were friendly especially the concierge team - very helpful. The negatives: Since this is a resort, the wifi isn't as good as business hotels and gets very slow. Buffet breakfast poor for vegetarians/vegans. First hotel Ive stayed at in Malaysia which doesn't offer soy milk. Lots of kids, tourists etc which didn't bother me at all but makes it harder to go to work when everyone else is playing golf and swimming..!

Great loation, friendly staff but not 5 star
The sea view room on level 10 with a balcony had a fantastic view of the harbour & South China Sea. Best to have breakfast included as there are not many cafes or restaurants within walking distance. Except for The Marina and Magellan Resort. The entrance to hotel was in the process of being renovated and not very welcoming. The hotel reception is dated and needs upgrading. I never saw a staff member at the guest services desk which I perceive as poor service. The pool and landscaped gardens adjoining the beach had a pleasant atmosphere, but although there was a pool bar and Breezes Cafe, they did not provide poolside service. For a supposedly five star hotel I thought I that it lacked the five star experience, however we enjoyed the location and friendly staff.
