The location was perfect--a short walk from Sta. Maria Novella train station and in proximity to numerous sights and restaurants in that historic neighborhood. The staff was extremely welcoming and attentive. I appreciated the turn-down of the bed in the evening with slippers put out for me. The decor overall is modern and tasteful with subdued colors enhanced by bold accents like red. I did not get to eat the breakfast as my checkout was too early. One negative is the overall layout of the hotel. To get to the Rosso, one enters through the sister hotel and has to traverse a long maze-like hallway. The main foyer is a bit too dark and cave-like, though it had modern decor. One could order drinks but the foyer-bar space did not seem as welcoming as it could be. My single room was quite small but efficient with a desk, wardrobe and wall-mounted TV. The room had a decent-sized bathroom and shower. Another small negative was the lack of electric outlets in the room. There were none near the desk for recharging electronics. I had to charge my phone from a plug near the bathroom door and worried I would step on it in the middle of the night. My room was far enough away from the piazza to buffer street noise with the airconditioner on (another great amenity in the summer!). I did hear muffled snoring from the next room. However, I would definitely consider booking here again for the location, friendly staff and cleaniness.

Exceptional 10.0
Best stay in Florence
As we tour through Italy a friend living in Milan recommended the Rosso 23 Hotel. We are so glad we selected the rooms with a view. My mother was in the adjacent room. The view of the square and cathedral were to die for. We opened our windows to hear the street performers in the daytime. Also, it was a 5 min walk to the train station which is where our day tours departed from. So the location was ideal. It was also only a 5 min walk in the opposite direction to the Duomo and other sites. We were amazed how we were in the middle of all the action and beauty. The breakfast was fantastic with hot and cold dishes. And the bedrooms were very quiet. If we ever return to Florence we would definitely stay here again. And the best thing was the price. It was totally reasonable! The rooms with the view were also quite large with big bathrooms that had bathtubs and a shower overhead.

A decent option
In general, this is a nice hotel with easy access to the heart of Florence and the train station. The quality of the hotel and amenities was good. The room was a bit small, but reasonable. The one night we stayed there, though, there was a musty ammonia like odor in our room and in a couple other parts of the hotel that we traversed. It wasn't overpowering, but it was noticeable. Given that our stay was short and that the odor was tempered, we didn't bother reporting it.

Central, comfortable and good value for money.
Conveniently situated a hundred yards or so from the terminus of the airport tram (T2, which costs a mere 1.5 euros) and right in the centre of town. All the landmarks and galleries are within easy walking distance (as is the railway station). The entrance lobby is impressive and the rooms are comfortable with one considerable drawback--as far as my room was concerned. I have never seen such a small shower. Only a very small person could find it comfortable to use. And yet there is space for a bidet!

If I were going back to Florence, I'd stay here
Hotel Rosso 23 is now part of Hotel Garibaldi Blu. You cannot enter through the doors at #23, you have to go down 4/5 doors to Garibaldi Blu. Positives - Location, within easy walking distance of the Duomo (Cathedral) the Galleria Della Academia (Home of Micheangelo's David, 3 original Stradivarius instruments and many other amazing works), and the Uffizi Gallery (Home to works by Micheangel, Botticelli, Caravaggio, DaVinci and Rembrandt). The room was comfortable, but the shower VERY small for a man of "heroic proportion". The bar the large and comfortable lobby of Garibaldi Blu has one of the great bartenders I have ever met. He speaks English better than many of my family and is just a joy to talk with. Not so great - I've already mentioned the shower, elevators in Italy tend to be tiny, most likely because the buildings they're in were built before elevators really were available in buildings like these. Both of us and our luggage had to make separate trips to get to the room. Also they do not know what a washcloth is. Bring one from home, this was a common thing in hotels in Italy.
