We stayed our first 3 nights at Michaels House, a charming little courtyard hotel. As many reviewers have noted it isn't the easiest for taxis to find. However as we arrived after midnight and the street was very dark we did have the Reception speak to our Taxi driver to give directions - so it wasnt a problem. Out room was clean, and very cute, the beds were amazing, especially seen as alot of hotels in China are very hard. These were very comfy, and the best nights sleep were had here. The only thing for us was the lighting in the rooms, was a bit dark, but that is just a personal preference, as we like good lighting. The courtyard was a lovely place to sit and relax at the end of the day. Location wise this is in a non-touristy part of Beijing, which we loved, a bunch of local restaurants and street food around the corner, and its in walking distance to the Jishuitan station (which is the circle loop - line 2) which will get to you everywhere you want to go. Also the station for catching the bus to Badaling if so inclined. However the best part of this hotel for a foreign traveller (or any traveller) is the hotel staff, Celine and the other girls were lovely, and welcoming, they go out of their way to help you. They provide a personal service as opposed to large hotels. They all speak English which helps when our chinese was very limited. So for us they made the stay even better and we would have no hesitation in staying here again - in fact we would want to.

Before I booked I noticed other reviews said it was a litle difficult to find down a side alley and our taxi driver also had trouble. Luckily I had directions from my son who stayed there 18 months ago. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the room comfortable and very clean. Excellent place to stay if you prefer to avoid the Western style hotels. Easy 10 minute walk to the subway meaning that everything is close! We ate at several excellent local restaurants.

What a wonderful hotel in a wonderful location! A lovely, traditional courtyard hotel amidst a Chinese suburb full of character - 10 minutes walk to the subway station and plenty of restaurants and street food to enjoy close by! Wonderful staff - extremely helpful and excellent English spoken by the receptionists!

This little hotel is lovely. The atmosphere is great, and english speaking staff welcoming. Good points: Comfortable, clean, atmosphere. Good price Bad points: Average breakfast, hard to find (off a little side street not shown on Hotels.com map), staff had limited knowledge of some things we wanted (no massages nearby? Only the one that comes to the hotel? one right around the corner I'm afraid).

The highlight of our stay was the fantastic service from the girls at reception. They were only too happy to help with our questions and requests. The hotel itself is very cosy and a world apart from large and impersonal big hotel chains. Highly recommended.

Felt like we were experiencing a real Beijing hotel, staff were good and helpful but had limited English. They didn't seem keen on us taking tours that weren't through the hotel. Breakfast was adequate but if we arrived after 8.30 the choice was limited. Generally good value and enjoyable.

The care and consideration of staff is outstanding. This delightful courtyard hotel is an experience I am glad to have had, I thought I might feel stifled but this was not the case. The only thing I missed was being able to make a hot drink whenever I wished, the room did not have an electric jug/kettle. I think I need to have a mug and a mini water heater the next time I go to China. I will certainly return to Michael's Place Beijing. One suggestion, please could they put the name and address in Chinese characters for people who book in. It is very hard to find an address in Beijing without the Chinese characters. In our efforts to reach Michael's Place Beijing, we were most fortunate to have the help of a Chinese policeman, an unbelievably kind young Chinese woman with a mobile phone who gave her time and a very kind and patient Chinese taxi driver.

A quaint little hotel offering very good service at a very reasonable room rate. The Emperor's Suite was worth the extra money and a lot of fun. The breakfasts were fine and the staff were able to organise tours for us that were good value. The bed was comfortable and the room had good amenities including a computer and wireless internet. We prefer to take taxis and they were hard to get sometimes but the staff were helpful with transportation. There is a bit of travel required to get to the main tourist areas as Michael's House is in the north of a very large city. The local restaurants were very good regarding both quality of food and value for money. Certainly recommended for travellers who want to experience some real local atmosphere.
