Don't stay here! Pay extra and stay somewhere else
We paid $155 for a double with ensuite. The most we paid for a room on our trip and hands down the worst room. We were on level 7 and when we went to use the lifts they said overloaded with 3 avg sized people in them. So I climbed 14 levels up to our room. It was cold as the heater hadn't been turned on. The miniscule tv worked, however the remote had flat batteries so I had to get up and stand on the bed to change the channel. The bedspread was dirty with white marks all over it. The shower had mold in it and the bathroom floor was dirty and somewhat sticky. The shower was awful! Took ages to get hot water and then the water would randomly go cold while showering. The shower head was broken and kept facing the back of the shower so I had to hold it upright with one hand and wash myself and my hair with the other. Wotif stated that the room had free wifi but they only offer free wifi on the ground level between 7am and 7pm otherwise you have to pay for it. We had water pipes going through the top of our room so it was noisy every time someone had a shower or used their bathroom. Seriously just don't stay here!! Go pay an extra $50 and stay somewhere nicer. To finish on a positive note the staff were friendly, although they certainly didn't want to hear about the free wifi as advertised. Also the view was nice of the central city.

Convenient location
We booked a private room with ensuite. Photos definitely made it look nicer than it was. We checked in around 6. Only 3 people in front of us in the queue, but it took half an hour for our turn to be served. Lovely staff no doubt, but one woman spent 15 minutes giving tourist advice to an older couple, total oblivious to the queue stretching out the door to the street. Having booked with Expedia, we hadn't received an email about having to download Tipi (if we had I probably deleted it - suggest using subject line: IMPORTANT: CHECK IN APP NEEDED). What happened to being able to give your name at the desk as a pre-paid guest? Why the need to be ID-ed. And why no non-app options for check in when you don't have the app/data on phone. We weren't even offered the free wifi code to download the app. Just slightly told off because 'this was their process'.) Room was ok. Convenient location. Comfortable enough. Smells of fat or BBQ wafting up from below prevented us from wanting to open the door or enjoy the balcony, but it was ok. However, at 10:30pm I had to go down to reception to request that the music blaring through the loudspeaker outside the door be turned down please. Maybe we're too old (early 40s) to be bothered with this sort of accommodation, but for the price of the room, I think it could be better. Or lower the price of the room to match the experience!

Worst checking in experience.
Firstly I was not made aware that in order to check into Base you need to download an app onto your phone. Although they have a tablet available, it is always in use. The last thing that you need to worry about after being jet lagged is to use your own mobile data to download an app in order to proceed through check in. The reception was not helpful in any degree and were actually rather rude, and did not have any care or consideration into the guests. The elevators to the bedrooms were so slow that you might as well have taken the stairs, it took five minutes of waiting before finally reaching the room a few floors up. In general if it wasn't for the fact that I got an average quality sleep I would be rating Base really poorly. If this is how all Bases operate, then I am going to take my business elsewhere.

Excellent location, limited staff.
Excellent location, beautiful building, shared areas clean but crowded. The limited desk hours and lack of staff was confusing, others sites say 24/7 but Hotels.com got it right 'limited hours' means exactly that. Arrived with bags to signs saying "not staffed until ****" Only option for luggage storage was long term and no staff around to get that option either, Auckland Base has options so I thought it would be the same within the franchise. Instead of the planned lunch time walk around in Wellington I went exploring the busy building but with bags then chose instead to walk and sit and wait in a local park as I found them within close walking distance, another option is to go across the road and watch a movie until staff available. Wellington has many excellent cafes for coffee, was not going to use the room kettle as it looked as though was used to boil dirty socks. The view was beautiful.

This wasn’t our first stay at the base Wellington. We had booked again as we had loved the location and price for what you get. This stay we had booked a double room with a balcony. However upon arrival to our room we discovered the door to the balcony was nailed closed. Possibly due to the fact there was scaffolding but then discovered our neiighbours has access to the same balcony. I spoke to the lady at the front and explained we had paid extra for a room with a balcony and she said she would come and see what she could do. She never came up to our room. Another thing that bothered us was the sewage smell coming from our bathroom, the smell seemed to keep worse throughout our stay. I had a great first experience with the Base however this stay was not so great. I would definitely stay again but will be sure to get what we paid for in terms of room.
