Gorgeous Tudor Castle
The castle and grounds were stunning and made a very peaceful stay. The staff were lovely and accommodating and answered all questions including where to eat locally as the restaurant was fully booked. We didn’t mind this as the menu was quite expensive and so the local pubs were perfectly fine. The room was elegantly furnished throughout with a very comfortable bed. It was clean and tidy on arrival and the Elemis toiletries were a great touch. Everything you needed was there and I made use of the slippers and bathrobes! The shower was fantastic too! I would have liked to have read more about the history of the place being a Tudor fanatic and felt perhaps some of the rooms and surrounding features could have had little plaques around them explaining a bit more about the history. The cooked breakfast was fantastic, hot and enjoyable- the scrambled eggs and Home made jam were amazing! However as we came down for breakfast at 9am, the cold buffet choice had all but gone, leaving no pastries to choose from and the coffee was a little cold. Nevertheless I enjoyed it all the same. The walks around the castle were lovely and I was a shame to see some of it in disrepair- making use of the grounds would add to the castle experience and perhaps relating to English Heritage properties may add to the attraction. The gardens also needed a little tending and I was very tempted to start work, as a keen gardener myself. Overall it was wonderful if pricy stay and I enjoyed it

Very good 8.0
The only issues I have are:- 1. The vegetarian meal options are offered as a starter or a main course. Judging by the meagre amount of food on the plate, I can only assume that the chef mistakenly thought that I had requested it as a starter. Or he believes (along with other restaurants) that vegetarians have the appetite of a mouse. I wouldn't mind so much if the price of the meal wasn't so expensive. 2. The bar price list stated £5.00 for a Bath Gem Ale and £3.00 for a Sambuca. I was charged £5.50 and £6.50. Evidently the price lists (displayed on each table in the lounge and library areas) had not been updated in line with a price increase or contained mistakes. Either way, you would not expect this to happen in a hotel of this standard and I feel that I have been overcharged.

Awesome stay
This place is well worth the money. My daughter and I stayed in the Elizabeth room. The room is at the top of a turret. To get to the room you have to walk up a spiral staircase with 40 steps. I recommend having the hotel carry your suitcase up and down the stairs. The room was beautiful. I the pictures on the website do not do it justice. The bathroom has a huge clawfoot tub and a big shower. we walked around the gardens and there were many flowers in bloom. The town is walking distance from the castle. One fyi. the doors are very small. I did get up during the night to use the restroom and almost knocked my self out when I did not duck should enough. overall a great place to stay. I would stay again. A little history, Henry VIII and Anne Bolen stayed there on their honeymoon.

History and culture
Brilliant place for character, history and a bit of culture. Friendly and attentive staff. Rooms in need of refurbishment which will be done soon with major investment of £9Million apparently due. Would recommend History tour with local guides from nearby Thornbury Museum. It was interesting to hear more about the Castle and the people who have lived there.

I was my big splurge to stay in a castle hotel. This was my Tudor weekend, so this castle fit right in to my theme. The room was large, and I don't know how I got it with a fireplace. Of course, it was hot and humid for the UK, so there was no way I was turning it on. The gardens are not terribly enormous, but some of the roses in the hedge boxes were in bloom, so that was magical. It was neat to drive through what might have been where the portcullis would have closed to challengers. Parking was spacious. The only draw back was that wifi would not work in my room, maybe because I use apple devices. It did work in the lounge which is a wonderfully furnished place with floor to ceiling windows and fireplaces. The only drawback was that servers catered to those they knew and pretty much ignored me. One time I never got asked if I wanted anything; the other I had to wait for the bill when the waiter forgot I was waiting for it. Breakfast was very, very good.
