The hotel itself was in a good location, close to Lambton Quay. I booked a Single room with a queen sized bed, however, it appeared this "queen sized" bed was simply 2 single beds put together. You could feel the springs digging into your back from the mattress. I'm not usually one to complain but when you pay for something you should expect to get it. Which brings me to the next point, parking. I was quite happy to pay for parking at the hotel but when I told the reception staff there were no available places I was rudely told "yeah its subject to availability" which I thought was extremely dissapointing, this information would've been useful before I paid for the parking, it would've also been nice to have been told there were approximately 15 car parks (if that) which are all occupied 99.9% of the time. The overall attitude of one staff member at this hotel ruined it for me and the service and room you receive for the price you pay is below average. I will not be recommending this hotel to anyone. There are many other hotels around Wellington that are more affordable and the service is exceptional, do not waste your money and patience with the Thornton Hotel.

things that make you go.... Umm
My mother died, and I travelled from Australia to Blenheim, staying in Wellington over night. My family booked online for me as I was too upset to think straight. However due to booking error via www.expeditia, they ended up booking me in twice on same day, instead of in Monday out Tuesday and in again Thursday out on Friday. As I had no phone or access to computer, explained this to hotel reception, re: booking error, that I was unable to amend via the website., So when I explained to reception error with booking, initially they said not a problem , come back on Thursday, we have plenty of rooms. I didn't get told however you will pay again at that point. I was so stressed as thought would be okay, instead when I came back on Thursday was advised I had to pay again. I was so distraught as was not sure if I had enough to pay for another night. I think the management could have shown me a bit more understanding. I was so over whelmed and praying I could cover unexpected costs, otherwise would have ended up being on the street. Profit first right. I will never book again via any online hotel site, or go to Thorndon Hotel again as they showed no care what so ever...

Adequate for one night, no longer.
Check in was strange, had to pay in advance with my credit card. A bond to cover a one night stay plus $50 towardso what or might not charge back to the room or spend in the bar or restaurant. Was told later on this was the hotel industry standard. We have traveled extensively in New Zealand in the last few years and have only ever been asked for credit card details, no money ever been taken. It took over 9 days for said money to be reversed on my credit card. The room needed a good clean, dust every where. Dirty cups. Tea and coffee box had not been refilled and rubbish had been left in it. On a high note. The restaurant was excellent, good value for money and great staff.

Not great
Check in was ok, staff are friendly-ish but not great. 8th floor hallway carpet ripped and stained. Room was disgustingly dirty, coffee mug stains on all surfaces, including a plastic tray(fresh stain, not even wiped) Ripped and stained bedroom carpet, some marks could be cleaned of this carpet. Filthy walls. Inches of dust under table and along skirting.Leftover food behind fridge. Fridge not even switched on at wall. Wouldn't even touch the coffees as inside kettle was filthy, obviously never be de scaled. Mouldy shower with rusting soap dish. Hairs on bathroom mirror and ceiling. That's just a few of the problems in the room. Restaurant ok, dinner options limited. Breakfast buffet ok but I had to pay full price for my 9 year old ,$30 for 2 of us when she only had 1 piece of toast and 1 piece of bacon!! Handy walking distance, but same could 've said of all other central Wellington hotels. Would not recommend.

The meal that got away
This is an old style place. Cream laminex walls rather than tiled bathroom. Vinyl floors in bathroom with metal shower floor. Small rooms but comfortable. An incident at dinner spoiled the visit. A long wait for a simple burger which was almost raw. As much as a enjoy my meat rare I really don’t like it raw. Returned my first burger to the kitchen, waited ages for it to be returned. Finally a new burger was placed in front of me equally raw. By then my husband had well and truely finished his meal. Staff just couldn’t get that all I wanted was for the meat patty to be put back under the grill. Instead I had a group of people standing around me offering me a different choice of meal. I got the impression chef wasn’t going to heat up that patty. My dinner that night was the few chips that accompanied the burger. We were not charged for the burger but I went without dinner but it was a long wait for a meal which never eventuates. This served to remind me that Rydges is not a customer focused hotel chain.
