Very good 8.0
Nice apartment close to the centre of town
Mostly good stay with just a few (minor) issues that stopped it from being perfect. First off, we had been advised to ring the intercom when we arrived as it was after 5.00pm (which we thought was very early for reception to close on a weekend, which one would imagine is when most people would be checking in or out) - nothing happened. Finally got into the hotel after phoning Expedia, who again told us to press the intercom. Next night we found another couple having exactly the same issue. Turns out the intercom hasn't worked for months according to a staff member! The room was nice, nothing special, but is showing some signs of wear with a few scuffs on furniture and minor marks on the carpet. The windowsills and heater needed a good wipe down with a damp cloth as they were very dusty, and the nets have mould spots on the bottom of them. But I know I'm super picky because I used to work in a motel. Otherwise very pleasant stay, and if the above was sorted out it would be a perfect place to crash if you're in Wellington for a couple of nights.

Exceptional 10.0
The Gilmer was a great place to stay while attending a conference in Wellington. The location is very central, making it easy to walk to the venue and other places. I arrived after the office closed, but arranged to get the check-in instructions in advance and there were no problems whatsoever. Coming by public transport via Lambton Quay, a major road through the city centre, you should use the lift for the nearby James Cook Hotel (instructions will be provided). The first time, it might be a bit confusing, but just walk through the car park exit and turn right, walking up the hill a bit. You will see the Gilmer on the left as you walk up. The room was not too small, so I felt comfortable and enjoyed having amenities like a kitchenette and a washing machine (that worked well) for clothes. The room was very clean and maintained well. I would definitely stay at the Gilmer on future visits to Wellington.

Good 6.0
Rather disappointing experience.
The staff were friendly but the hotel left a lot to be desired. Although I sent an email in advance there was no parking reserved for me. Also I discovered that if you book through you have to pay 20NZD instead of 15NZD offered on their website. If you are in the situation I suggest you park in the road overnight as the parking meters dont operate and then put it in the car park immediately opposite the hotel before 8am. The room we stayed in was like an oven as there is no air conditioning. The window could only be opened about 10cm. Out of our window we looked straight into an office block which seemed to be about 4 metres away. There were lots of warnings of what the hotel would charge you for breakages, dirty linen, starting the fire alarm(2000nzd) - not very welcoming. Room was a bit small. On the plus side you get a washer/drier in the room , bed was comfortable. The surroundings of the hotel seem to be car parks and offices. There is a nearby elevator which takes you to the main street quickly.

Very good 8.0
Nice room and high location.
When I first booked in for my weeks stay I was given a tiny room not even big enough to open my case. It was also noisy and had scaffolding outside. I went to reception and explained this was not what I had booked. I was then moved to a room which also had a living area. This was done with great politeness and efficiency. This room was very suitable to my needs and expectations so I was very happy. There are quite a few car parks in the area and this meant quite a bit of traffic noise. The route down to the main streets was via a lift in a car park. This made the location very central to the heart of town. It's a good spot provided you are ok with lifts. Didn't find any places nearby for breakfast. But lots in the main street area.

Good 6.0
Great facilities, but hot and noisy.
I have mixed feelings about my stay in the Gilmer apartment hotel. While the room was fully euqipped with the cooker, washing machine, dryer, microwave and a kettle, it was pretty hot in the room and the hotel does NOT have air-condition. The temperature in the hotel corridor was a few degrees lower than in the room. So I didn't even thought about cooking, because it would make it unbearable. If you open the window, the room becomes very noisy (day and night) - it sounds like a huge fan installed in front of the building (am not sure what it is but it is on day and night). So while the space deserves 4-5 stars, the lack of the air-condition and noise render it to 3 stars.
