Coming to the entrance of the hotel - people were standing on the steps and further onto the foot path smoking cigarettes. We don't object to people smoking (we are non -smokers) but, it was disgusting walking through the thick cloud of smoke and was hoping it wasn't a sign of things to come. We booked and payed for our room a long time in advance (we live in Australia) so, were disappointed to be put in a room directly above where renovations were taking place. What this meant for us was, we were woken up quite early by banging and the smell of burnt timber that they were working with. We were advised that the staff would find another available room and will move our belongings accordingly We packed everything up and set out on our activities for the day. Staff moved our belongings to another room roughly the same quality although, it did not have a microwave like our first room had. They brought the small fridge from our original room to the new room which we were happy about. It was also noticed that an item that was packed on top of one of our bags was not with all our contents, we certainly were not happy about this. We phoned to inform reception staff and were told they would call us after some investigation. Roughly after an hour waiting without a phone call to our room, we went to reception to ask if the item was found. Pleasingly yes it was but, no explanation was given as to why the item was not brought with the rest of our belongings.

Would definitely stay here again!
We were at the Grand at Trafalgar Square for two nights in early August. We had four adults in the room with a double/queen bed and a pull-out sofa bed. The main bed was extremely comfortable. The sofa bed was...a sofa bed, so the mattress was thin and our two adult sons weren't hugely comfortable. But if you had small kids, it would be great. Other than that, we loved the room. It was clean and attractive, with nice amenities. It had a small kitchenette with tea service, a fridge, sink, and microwave. And the bathroom was spotless with a deep soaking tub. The location was excellent! It's across a street and only about a half block away from the Charing Cross Underground stop, so you can leave the hotel and be on a train in about five minutes. It's only a half block from Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery, and about a 10-15 minute walk to the Parliament building and Westminster Abbey. We also walked to Buckingham Palace...maybe a 20-30 minute walk (we took the scenic route through St. James Park). But it's so easy to hop on the Tube and get anywhere in the city quickly. You can't beat the location of this hotel for easy access to just about any attraction if you're a tourist. The hotel is also next door to an amazing bakery and a couple of cafes that have great, inexpensive food. Overall, we enjoyed our time at the Grand at Trafalgar and would definitely stay again!

Great location, hotel is mediocre
Pros: Proximity to everything. Location doesn’t get better than this. Filtered bottled water station Nice front desk gentleman named, Daniel Housekeeping was sub par. Room wasn’t that clean, lot of surface dust. Nothing was replenished (coffee, etc) when the room was cleaned while we were out the following day Room service (restaurant Bianco 43) called at 10:20 pm requesting for plates to be put outside - odd request but I obliged Room service (employee from Bianco 43) knocked on door at 10:30 pm asking where the food delivery basket was. We never brought the basket in, it was left outside when the food came and I don’t know whether someone else picked it up or what happened BUT there was no reason to knock on a guest’s room at 10:30 pm at night to ask for something so trivial that could’ve been inquired about at a decent time the following day. Maid was about to come into the room without knocking. Door opened and quickly shut (when she realized people were inside). I didn’t have the deadbolt on because I had went out for coffee earlier in the morning. Still, this was at 10:00 am, check-out isn’t until 12:00 noon so housekeeping should’ve knocked. UNACCEPTABLE. Room was very cold throughout entire stay. Called the front desk and they said the temperature didn’t go any higher than 25 degrees.

Mixed review, better good than bad.
Our stay was mixed. We'd stayed there before with no problems. We had 4 rooms for 3 nights at New Years Eve. A pleasant surprise was that the area was secured for midnight on NYE and so only those with wrist bands (which we were provided for free by the hotel) could come onto Northumberland at the hotel location. This meant we could walk outside 2 min to midnight and enjoy the fireworks without a giant crowd which was an unexpected treat. For room service you can order from hotel or seemlessly from local restaurants and have it delivered. I chose the former option and received a cold pizza and did not receive wine that was ordered and charged. When the delivery person came back with the wine, she had no opener, when she came back with the opener, she had no glasses - we gave up and ate cold pizza out of bathroom water glasses. Each of the 3 other rooms in my reservation had room service with no issues reported. Due to NYE, they closed the lounge early the night before and unceremoniously threw about a dozen patrons out. There was no door man on duty and so we went to Trafalgar Square to flag down our own cabs when we needed them. Not a huge deal but a bit annoying in the rain and certainly not common for nice urban hotels. I could hear when someone moved around on the floor above and my floor made noise and moved the wardrobe when I walked. I don't recall that from last time - perhaps it depends on the room.

Location can't make up for poor service
When we arrived we were placed in a terrible room that shared a window next to the oven vent from the pizza restaurant below (Bianco 43). Our room smelled like burnt pizza bread most of the day, so we asked to be moved. That afternoon the hotel moved us to a nicer room on a higher floor, away from the vent. The next morning we noticed that a couple clothing items were missing. We assumed we left them in a drawer and called the hotel to ask if we could retrieve them. The hotel said they would check and call us back. They called a few minutes later saying there was nothing in the room. We pressed them saying that we know where the items were left and they should be there. They again check and checked the housekeeping office and said nothing was there. We again pressed them to check and even asked if we could check. After a lot of back and forth, they took us to the room to check and sure enough the clothing was gone. We again asked them to help find it. Nobody had stayed in the room since us leaving someone must know where the items were (Two $200 pairs of pants and a brand new - tag on - sweater). To make a long story shorter...after a lot of back and forth...we posted a negative review of the hotel saying that they stole our clothing. And to no surprise...the next morning we had our clothes back. There's a lot more to say, but no more room in this window to use...
