Nice location, evening meal disappointing, no bread, had to send starter back, could only order wine by the glass and not a bottle, £11 a glass, only five channels on TV, breakfast a bit disorganised, toast soggy, orange machine packed up, Average at best

The rooms were modern, clean and comfortable. Check in was efficient and the staff friendly and helpful. This hotel is an amazing rural retreat complete with it's own woodland walk, great for individuals and families.

The hotel itself is more of a Motel. The rooms are small, hot with no aircon. The check-in staff don't seem overly friendly and were quite rude. We had a couple of drinks in the bar. I asked for "House Red Wine". They gave us the Shiraz (£8.50 a glass). The next morning I had a quick look at the bar tariff. They gave us the most expensive glass of red wine on the menu and NOT house (£7.25 Merlot). The bar staff also joked about how if you ask for a Spirit and Mixer they have to give you the bottled coke (£3.75), not coke from the tap (£2.75) due to orders from "Management". One can assume they are purposefully scamming customers who are drinking hoping they wouldn't notice the obscene prices because they are drunk. All in-all I would say this hotel is very poor and purposefully goes out of it's way to serve you more expensive drinks than you requested. The bar service is simply a shambles. While the main building itself looks pretty, I most definitely wouldn't stay here again.

The main house is architecturally gorgeous and with excellent food to match (we ate from the bar menu and were really happy). Our room however was dated in out-buildings arranged in Butlinsesque rows. Not deep cleaned enough, thin-walled and the bathroom was cramped. However the bed was really comfortable and the daily room servicing was good. There was too much plastic in evidence though (plastic cups in plastic bags, bathroom shower gels etc in small non refillable containers etc). The grounds have potential to be truly magnificent but were not yet up to scratch (no croquet equipment, tennis court not at all ready, health centre not yet functional, flower beds ready to flourish and wow but yet to be weeded and planted etc etc) The front desk service was sadly below standard for us (we had to complain of mould in one room and were dealt with poorly). The young waiting staff also have lots to learn about hospitality expectations (attentiveness, independent thinking and not using their personal phones on duty!) The stand-out member of staff however, and by a country mile, was Cally who simply did an amazing and seemingly natural job to make the 60th birthday weekend otherwise memorable for all the right reasons - big thanks to her! A few younger staff too offered greater hospitality than others which shows staffing could get there. With some sharp, timely, contemporary improvements New Place could be simply incredible and we would return.

Having cancelled leisure facilities at short notice for my birthday and complaints had to go to senior management. He sorted us out to make my birthday special. There were 13 of us one room was horrible and reception staff not helpful at changing it , eventually they did . However restaurant and bar staff went above and beyond to help us. Thank you Cally and Lucy . We were promised Croquet but no mallets! Think this hotel needs to improve detail and customer service.

Lovely weekend away with friends. Disappointing that the leisure facilities were closed but the hotel compensated us with wine with our dinner. Also outdoor games were broken which was a shame. Hotel staff were fantastic. Really friendly, helpful and attentive.
