Where to start.. check in. We got in a few minutes early and that was immediately commented on, we said we would be happy to wait until 3. In addition to that a large dog came, started barking at us, then pressed up against us. I recently was bitten by a dog and am quite scared of them, the front desk gentleman (instead of telling the dog to be quiet or bringing him over) told me to just pet him because he wont stop. When he pulled up our reservations he said "ohh, another expedia one" and then handed us the keys. He told us to call him and let him know the room was ok, a good indication that it wouldnt be. We got to the room and it was not clean but I was too scared of the dog to go back down, and I figured all the rooms would be like this to be honest. Some weird stains dripping down the walls, the bathtub was off color, under the bed hadn't been vacuumed in a while, dust on the window sills. This wouldve been acceptable for a $30 motel, but not anything over that. The noise of the hotel was weird. The heater made a hissing noise until we just turned it off. The hallway was like a wind tunnel, so if anyone opened the door on the far end, our personal door would sound like it was slamming shut. The decor in our room consisted of a few small historical photos, next to a re spackled wall, with little mismatched paint cover ups. If the decor was more exciting it could have distracted me from all the other things wrong with the hotel, but alas, it just accentuated it.

    August 2020 Stay

To start, the desk clerk was extremely friendly. Upon arriving in the lobby, we were greeted by his big and friendly dog. Unlike some reviewers, we appreciated the precautions being taken by the hotel during COVID including questionnaires asking about our health, as well as sanitizing the pen and keys in front of us. Because of COVID, the hotel now offers a $5 voucher per person to The Works down the street instead of continental breakfast, which we actually thought was a better deal anyways. Also, despite booking the cheapest room the clerk offered use free room upgrades which we thought was generous, even though we ultimately declined due to concerns about street noise. In terms of the room, you're staying in a historic hotel so if you're expecting The Ritz, you should look elsewhere. The room was adequate for most travel needs. The only critiques I will offer are that the beds are not the most comfortable and do squeak when you turn. Also, there were no electrical outlets in the bathroom. So if you wanted to blow dry your hair, you would need to do so outside of the bathroom with no mirror. If you are looking for an affordable hotel in the heart of Brattleboro, I would recommend The Latchis as long as you know you're sacrificing some modern amenities. Also, just be aware that things close pretty early downtown. I think the latest anything is open is 8PM weekdays and 9PM weekends, so plan accordingly.
