If you like your independence stay here.
While the location is ideal I wouldn't recommend it for someone visiting NY for the first time. I had read the reviews where they mention how loud the nearby street noise was and although I have lived in NY before I had to sleep with earplugs (provided on the nightstand) from 3am to 6am because of how loud the street cleaning was on a Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. The hotel is ideal for someone staying by themselves who like their independence and don't want to be greeting by front desk staff. Although this hotel has a door man (someone just sitting behind a podium) not once did they greet us or open the door, hold the elevator door or simply give a smile. I'm guessing this staff position is more of a security front because I've never experienced such cold behavior at a hotel before. I stayed 4 nights and maybe on my last day the guard replied when I said "good morning" most of the time they avoid eye contact and simply do not interact with you. If you're expecting your room to be cleaned BEWARE they do not provide this service evehthough its a button option on the app but you quickly realize its just a button available for all their locations except the service is not provided (at this venue) why have a button that you think you can use just in case you want housekeeping to tidy up your room if the service isn't provided. Also you get one roll of toilet paper, 2 large towels, 2 hand towels and 2 face wash towels. Not sure how you would request more since there's no staff.

Air conditioning doesn't keep rooms cool
This hotel does not have a functional air conditioning system. The air conditioning is not controlled by the thermostat in your room, it's controlled by the building management who of course keep it at a muggy 75 degrees. Which in swampland Manhattan on the 10th floor in June is uncomfortable (unless you like being hot). I had business meeting and dinner all day so I didn't have an extra few hours to call Sonder and wait for an employee to show up to try and set the building temperature to a cooler temperature. The building is nice aesthetically. Looks like a nice apartment building on the outside. There is a fancy underground restaurant (with no signage) in this building so it was awkward taking the elevator because restaurant patrons would get lost, follow me into the elevator. They of course don't have the elevator code, so I enter my code as they awkwardly ask me where the restaurant is. So be prepared for ppl to be lost in the elevator with you and you'll need to put your code in. This happened 2x where people were on the elevator but didn't have elevator code or said their code wasn't working. The room itself is decent. I booked not the smallest room but a size up with King bed. Good amount storage for 1 person. Of course the area is great.

Good, unless you want to sleep
The hotel has its convenient location and modern amenities to recommend itself. The big problem is nighttime noise. The building overlooks a busy intersection and the rules for residential quiet hours don't seem to apply in this district. Some combination of car horns, jackhammer and garbage trucks kept up the noise all through the night, which wouldn't be as bad if the windows had any sound isolation to speak of. A white noise machine and earplugs allowed us to get some intermittent sleep, but the management really needs to invest in sound-proof windows.

My husband and I really enjoyed staying here. The location was pretty good for getting around Manhattan with a subway station 2 blocks away. And the room and bathroom were much larger than other hotels we had looked at for a similar price. They were prompt in their response over the app when I needed more towels for the room, and it was great that they provided a white noise machine and earplugs to help cancel out outside noise. Will definitely be looking into other Sonder properties in the future.

Sonder Flatiron is great! A very big room for NYC. Great area. Close to subway. All keypad entry. It’s not a typical hotel. No front desk although they do have a lobby employee who is helpful. Always love a Sonder.

The soundproofing for the rooms is very bad. I can hear people talking and footsteps at the street level. There was also some construction going on at 2am. The noise was unbearable. The ear plugs they provided did not help. Bathroom in the room is also in desperate need of an upgrade. Room cleaning must be scheduled through their app otherwise, they will not come into your room to clean. For this price, I might as well book Hilton. On the bright side, location and ease of check in was great.
