Firstly I can confirm the hotel rooms were very clean and the staff very helpful. Bed was comfortable and the breakfast had plenty of options including cooked (buffet style). The hotel is quite noisy (humming etc). Our original room on the 9th floor was exceptionally so. I talked to the staff about this and they moved us to a lower floor which was much better and received an upgrade in the bargain. Why only a 3 then? Having travelled a lot I didn’t feel it achieved the standards of a 4. The rooms are very basic especially the ‘standard’ room where the decor was awful. It’s almost like they are saying ‘you’ve paid for a cheaper room so we’re going to make it look cheaper’. With a few minor alterations they could improve. In fact the whole hotel feels a little soulless. WIFI was very poor. It dropped out regularly and more often than not I could not connect. Certainly couldn’t use it to contact home by WhatsApp or FaceTime. At breakfast they didn’t change the serving spoons often enough and several were coated with congealed food (congealed baked beans yuck). The location is central and there is a taxi rank outside. There are plenty of restaurants around including the harbour side eateries which are close. If you are looking for good food at a reasonable price I recommend the Featherston just up the road.

Ok but doesn't go the extra mile
The room was mostly tidy and comfortable. Comfy beds. A bit of plastering dust(?) on the floor in corner of the bathroom, and the room smelt like paint so must have been renovated recently. The front staff were mostly friendly and helpful, but when asked about buses etc. they had no timetables, and no real idea - just pointed to Lambton Quay, and said it had lots of buses. One letdown was the lady serving on the breakfast bar on Tuesday morning. No smiles, very short with us, and just didn't seem to want to be there. Saw her shove past a couple of her colleagues quite rudely too. Just puts a bit of a downer on what is an otherwise nice hotel. Would stay again if the staff were a bit more helpful and if all were friendly.

Central location
I was disappointed that I could not get parking. The reception staff were not very helpful and the attitude seemed to be "I'll help, if you insist" This was noticed several times. An example of this occurred when I asked for a shower cap. I was told to come down to reception and collect it and only when I sighed did he say he would bring it. I had asked for a room with a walk in shower as opposed to a shower over the bath because of my arthritis and was given an accessible room which was a surprise, but it was a nice room with basic facilities. Pity about the awful view. The food was not up to hotel standards, however, it was okay. The waiters and waitresses were lovely and attentive. The hotel is in a great central location and was good value for money. I would recommend this hotel as a good place to stay so long as you are happy with basic facilities which are spotlessly clean.

Great Location
Great location, easy to walk to all events, shops, attractions. Staff were very helpful but not particularly knowledgeable about attractions, eateries etc which was disappointing. The beds gave us backache but the room was pleasant. No soap for washing hands, only shower gels available. Had to ask for an extra towel as there were 3 of us as only 2 towels were provided. I would have thought this kind of detail was taken into consideration when 3 people were checking in. The restaurant food and service was very good and staff were friendly and helpful. Great barista coffee made on site which was great. Overall good experience but minor details would have taken this experience much further up there. We requested a taxi the night before to pick us up the next morning at check out - this wasn't done which was very frustrating and not a good look for the hotel.

Food needs improving
We had two meals during our stay. My son ordered a burger and the bun was very plastic looking and not very fresh. My husband had a corn cob that came with his meal and it looked like it was past it's due date. Uneatable. The second evenings meal, the same corn came out again and ribs were not very hot so assuming that they ribs weren't cooked from scratch and they were quite chewy. My husband has some sort of fried potato sticks which were so fatty none of us could eat them. Hence our third night, we had to eat elsewhere. It was a shame as there isn't a lot close by to the hotel without getting a taxi or take a car.
