Very good 8.0 From 338 reviews

Good 6.0
Dark and cramped rooms, but good location
The location was ideal. It's right next to the subway station, so getting around the city was very easy. The rooms were clean, but the one thing we couldn't get over was how dim the rooms were. There was practically no lighting. Breakfast was not included. 150 RMB for 2 people ($21 USD), or 80 RMB for 1 person ($11 USD). The breakfast spread was nice, but it got boring after a while and became not worth it to keep paying every day. We switched to local restaurants for our breakfast. You can exchange currency at the front desk for a fair exchange rate, which was very convenient. The lobby service was a little snobby for what it wasn't. They were very particular about where you could sit and how you could sit. Their lobby chairs are somewhat strange, so it's hard for a short person to comfortably sit. If you pull your legs up so you can lean against the back of the chair, be prepared to have someone yell at you. Other than that, our stay was OK. The rooms were very cramped and dark, but they were clean and the most affordable price point for the location.

Poor 2.0
Like being in an oven
We arrived in end of april for a 3 days stay to end our trip through China. The room was hot we we arrived and just got hotter by the time we were ready to go to bed. After turning the AC for an hour, the temperature wouldn't drop. We asked the staff downstair and they told us the AC would not work in any room during winter. I understand we were still in april but it was 30° outside. We barely sleep the 3 nights we were there since it was too hot. The "high-speed" internet was the same for the whole hotel, not per room or floor and was barely usable. When I complained to the reception, the employee replied condecendly that it was normal i wasn't able to go on facebook in China. I didn't even mentionned facebook or any specific website but said i was trying to download a small document and my computer was saying it would take 1h for a word document to be done. Finally, i inquired twice about the free shuttle service. On the evening before leaving, the staff had no idea what i was talking about and said to take public transportation. The day we were leaving, i tried my luck again and they said to go the the beijing international hotel and pretend i was staying there. Why would an hotel include in their feature free shuttle if they would send us to another hotel? We decided to take public transportation as previously recommended, instead of pretending to have been guest to an hotel we probably should have stayed at instead of this poor excuse of an hotel.

Fair 4.0
The Howard Johnson Paragon is not in a convenient location to much except the train station. The staff was friendly but the comfort of the room was awful! The room was uncomfortably warm and no matter how low we set the air conditioner the room never cooled down. We had booked a room for three adults which they provided by placing a roll away bed in the room. The floor would have been more comfortable...the bed was hard and lumpy with only a duvet and no top sheet. That added to the overall discomfort of the warm room. I would only recommend this hotel if you need to travel by train.

Very good 8.0
A decent place to stay.
I like the location of the HoJo's in Beijing. It's right next to the Beijing Railway stop on Line 2 on the Metro. Centrally located for just about everything. I don't do nightlife, so not sure how that aspect is, but for getting around and cost, it's good for me. Staff is reasonably helpful; many speak English well enough to get by, and continue to improve. I wish my Mandarin would improve at a similar rate! The place shows it's age, but price, location help to balance it out. Beds are comfy.

Exceptional 10.0
Excellent service from front desk staff
Front desk staff were efficient and helpful. Vivien helped me to reconfirm the international area code for harbin when I wanted to make a call there. And Iris Yang used her personal handphone to call Harbin hotel for me when I could not call from my room. She politely declined when I offered to pay her for the International call. Thanks you ladies! The room was clean but was too hot even without turning on the heater. We were informed that airconditioning was not operable in winter and advised to open the window. We did and it was cooler but it was very noisy as our room was facing the railway station where announcements went on throughout the night. The construction noise of the bridge also went on the whole night. We have requested for a quiet room during booking and upon check in. Perhaps the room would be if the window was not opened?
