Very disappointed with the level of service
We have a toddler and stayed at the hotel a s a family of four the week before Christmas. Hotel had planned an unannounced (to us) renovation in front of the elevators for 3 days and we are staying at the 2nd floor. Staff did point us to the stairways with elevators out. Our toddler fell in the stairways when we were heading to the beach. I spoke to someone at the reception and told them what happened, he took notes. Never heard back from staff. Two days later I was waiting for my car at the hotel's valet park. After waiting for 10mins the staff wtold me it is on its way. Another 10mins passes I ask the same person if there is an update. He responds "I already told you it is on its way, there is no further update. Next time you should call down to prevent waiting". He then turns back and does a high five with a colleague, making me further upset. Not told b4 you can call down ahead. I ask for the manager. The manager comes down and they waive the day's valet charge and say they will better train their staff. I tell the manager about my son's accident and he takes a note. No one gets back. Finally during the check out I tell them again and that I have a doctor's report etc. and that no one ever got back to me. They tell me that the security director will follow up. Anyway long story short this is a hotel that lacks focus on customer experience. It is evident in all their actions of their staff. It is not part of the company's values. Will never stay there again.

Fair 4.0
I was so excited to spend my vacation in Oahu in the infamous Pink 🏨. But, quickly did all my dreams and expectations died out one by one. Let's start at the beginning. The hotel seems like an aged antique but, in need of a renovation. I went for it and upgraded to the historical bldg but, aside from the view the room was small outdated and mildewy with zero to no shower pressure and an air conditioning system that was so loud it made you almost want to turn off and deal with the heat. The staff is very unfriendly and almost rude. The extra charges on the beach were infuriating $40 for resort fees daily plus $40 again if you want a beach chair daily again plus parking car fees fees fees fees. The food is also crap. I tried the main tail bar the restaurant the room service all same bad food. The shops are dated and the shopkeepers rude! I've been coming to Hawaii since the 80’s and always dreamed of staying at this historic hotel. However, I think it's heyday is long and gone and I waited too long to stay at what I'm sure was the place to be. One thing that was a joy daily was the cute pink bakery in the front with all the amazing delicious Hawaiian pastries. The Royal Hawaiian was not a 4-star hotel anymore. Maybe a low 3 Perhaps a due overhaul of the place is needed to make it the beauty that it once was. Plus a new chef and menu and an attitude adjustment to the entire staff and beach crew. Everyone seems miserable to work there and to deal with any request.

4 star experience for 5 star luxury price
It was ok. Have stayed many times. Has lost a bit of it’s “grandeur” as far as service. They have a new reservation system & my prepaid reservation through Hotels.com did not show up in their system. I spent and hour & half in the lobby for them to try and figure it out. The front desk person kept going in the back to ask for manager’s assistance. Manager never came out to personally address me. I finally called Hotels.com. Hotels.com was extemely helpful and called the hotel directly while I was on hold. It was only because of Hotels.com customer service that I was finally able to check in...at 9pm! I was exhausted. It was also my birthday. Royal Hawaiian management did nothing to aplogize for delay. Also, there is no way to reserve beach or pool loungers unless you book online months in advance. One other “complaint” - I stayed in a historic room (which I prefer for the authenticity) and my take-out lunch (which I left in the room for 2 hours in it’s packaging) ended up having ants in it. Location is phenomenal and the property is beautiful. I do fee the property does not qualify for the “5 star luxury” description.

Very good 8.0
The gardens and the older parts of the hotel are great, very much a step back in time. The trees, lawns, space and gardens all around the hotel are amazing and they make returning to the hotel after any outing a real pleasure unsurpassed by any other hotel in the strip. The 70'-90's extensions on the beach front are not as flash. The beachfront parts - Monarch reception room and Azure restaurants - are the least appealing architectural aspects of this hotel, also they stack chairs, tables and stage eqpmt on the beachfront outside the Monarch room.... strange and I find it somewhat disrespectful to the paying guests that this space is not offered for their comfort and enjoyment? ..maybe some deck chairs or lounges...(Check the SurfRider for a good example of well-used beach-frontage). Paths, corridors, lifts, a/c, lighting, doors, bathrooms, pool were all good - very clean, good quality and functional during our stay. Some staff walk by and do not even offer a nod or half smile. The place needs some undercover service appraisals... But other staff were very nice and very helpful such a Eva on reception and most of the Azure restaurant staff. Our room, a king garden view (rm 453) was more-or-less perfect. Huge volume (floor-space and ceiling height), large walk-in robe, subtle old world furnishings with perfect decor and in perfect condition. Azure food is fantastic. The beachfront bar is not as flash as some but is still a great place for beachfront lunch or drink.

Historic Hotel But Busy Location in Waikiki
We truly enjoyed The Royal Hawaiian hotel - the grounds were beautiful, the architecture gorgeous, the staff helpful and very hospitable, the food delicious. Our lower score deals with the facts that our room's air conditioning didn't work properly so it was hot and humid, our check-in process took over 30 minutes with only two families in front of us and two staff members on duty at the front desk, and multiple construction projects had the majority of the stores inside the hotel closed during our stay. The location is perfect - if you are looking for the famed Waikiki beach or any of hundreds of high end shopping destinations and scores of restaurant options. But it is a crowded area, too, which diminishes the specialness of the historic location.
