Almost 5 star but Management and Staff needs work.
Room had a wonderful view of the harbor fantastic sunrises. Room was great except for no safe in room. Had a problem when they seemed to have lost my laptop I left with them to go into a safe deposit box but they said it wouldn't fit so they put it into the luggage room that they said was safe but then couldn't find it for almost an hour when we tried to pick it up that evening after returning from a day of touring. Turned out someone else had put it in a big safe in a back office and didn't pass on the change to anyone on the next shift so it took a long time to find while we were being grilled inappropriately about why we left the laptop with them, or if we had already picked it up. A lot of stupid questions that had nothing to do with finding my laptop. This was very upsetting when we should have been relaxing in our room after a long day. Turned out after my wife said she thought it would fit in one of their regular safe deposit boxes that it did fit so we had no other issues with that the rest of our 6 day stay. Only other complaint was with the restaurant staff at breakfast in the morning. They would close of a large section with front window views of the harbor early and tell us we had to sit in a section looking at walls and other people. That is not what people travel 8000 mi + for we wanted to sit and have a relaxing breakfast while enjoying the view out the front windows. This is totally unacceptable for a hotel that wants to rate 5 stars. Mngmnt & staff needs work

Exceptional 10.0
The hotel with the best of both views.
The Grand Chancellor greatest asset is the view. I've been to hotels where once you reach your level, you find yourself in a tunnel with room doors on each side and a blind wall at the end. No matter which level you go to, they're all the same. The Grand Chancellor thought better and opened a wide window at the end of all hallways. You've got the view, there. Coming out of the lift, you also have a wide landing, with a large open window, again with a full view on the harbour. They even provide a pair of binoculars so you can check that the Investigator is docked near Battery Point. Upon booking, you can choose a room with a view to the harbour side or to the mountain side. Whether you choose one or the other (This March, the Mountain view appeared to be slightly cheaper, because you also have a view on the streets below) you are not loosing much. The mezzanine and the main lobby both have view on the harbour, which is very nice anyway. Reception is quick and efficient. If everybody is busy, someone else pops out to look after you. I did not have to request a breakfast menu or the wi-fi code. It's all in the booklet you get. Nice and easy. I had a standard room. One queen bed, one table with TV, one separate desk, in case I wanted to keep writing my next best-selling novel, a sofa and an armchair. Spacious enough for myself and my ego... It would be just fine for two people. The bathroom is neat and clean, near new. A very pleasant experience throughout.

Poor 2.0
unpleasant stay
We booked a harbour view room for 4 nights for our 10yr wedding anniversary, our parents also were booked in for our celebrations. When we arrived the TV was not working, the staff were quick to have it fixed. The 2nd night we realised the toilet was leaking from the base of the unit and smelled terrible. The stench and experience was disgusting. We were moved to another room. In this room the air conditioning was not working very well, the lowest the room got was 25 degrees and hovered around 27/26 degrees. Not very good when outside is 36degrees and all you want to do is escape the heat. The staff told us the hotel was struggling with the heatwave which was disappointing to hear as our parents had no issue with the air conditioning. The staff put a fan in the room, it did help as long as you were in front of the fan. The overall experience was very disappointing, the staff were great in trying to smooth over these glitches. We were given a complementary bottle of wine a buffet breakfast. This was ok but the hotel experience was disappointing, they really need to lift their standards if they are going to charge the rates they do.

Very good 8.0
Nice hotel, friendly staff
We had a very pleasant stay. This hotel is fairly well positioned, about a 5 min walk to Salamanca (next time we will stay closer to Salamanca as it is too cold to walk too far home at night). The hotel is clean and fairy well up to date, considering it was probably built 30 -40 years ago when mission brown was in fashion. The rooms are nice, nothing too exciting but better than average. You definitely want a room with harbour view!!! The view is amazing... the other side of the hotel (where we stayed) is very noisy as it is on the main road... even on the 18th floor we could hear the traffic loud and clear. Car parking is cheap and easy. Staff were very friendly and even sent up a bottle of sparkling when they heard we were celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary! However when the movie package broke down and we had spent 2 hrs with a maintanence in our room trying to fix it they offered another bottle but it never arrived. Also had to call room service 3 times to get a plate and knife to the room... absolutely minimal kitchenwise... overall we were happy but might look for somewhere else next time as it wasn't a stand out experience.

All Staff were friendly and courteous, THE YOUNG LADY WHO CHECKED ME IN AND OUT and also sorted a few other things for me should be an ambassador for the Grand Chancellor her name I believe was Amy. I found my room to be quite cold no matter how much I tried to turn up the heating. On my final night the window rattled all night as it was windy, upon investigation the next day the window had an issue that had been partially attended to but not finalised. I reported to reception. A young man came up and thanked me for letting them know. That was probably my let down for the weekend, had the window been pushed hard enough it would have opened, hence the rattling it wouldn't close properly. Also the security peep hole in the door is to high if your under tall. Room Service and House Keeping Knocked I was unable to see who it was. this not huge but could be a security issue.
